About last weekend..

I haven’t shot an engagement session or a wedding in years.. but when these friends asked I couldn’t say no! We spent the day touring around Canmore and Dead Man’s Flats and had the most amazing weather, right before the snow fell. Thank you Lauren and Jason for trusting me with these special moments.

Speaking of the perfect shot.. withtayy holding this Kakasana, crow pose, was the icing on the Asana cake of this session.

A common misconception between this and Bakasana, or crane pose. Crow pose keeps the elbows bent and the knees wither squeezing inward on the outside of the elbows or on top of the elbows. Crane pose straightens the arms, and the knees land closer to the armpits on the triceps.

Personally, I love to practice yoga in a space without mirrors. You get to escape the inner critic that takes you out of the moment and back into the limits of your physical form. When you realize that perhaps you look like something different than the way you feel, you can begin to lose trust in your intuition. It doesn’t matter the way the Asana looks, what matters is the way it makes you feel.

These Asana photo sessions keeps the practitioner in the moment, moving their bodies without their own judgements. Behind the lens I offer suggestions, not to make a posture more aesthetic, but to nurture an experience of limitless possibilities.

In slide one, she enters Ardha Chandrasana, half moon pose. In slide two, I ask for her to utilize the Vyana vayu, a spiraling outward force of prana. Push down into the floor, lift the top hand to the sky opening and stacking the shoulders, reach the lifted foot to the wall. Send the energy outside of the bounds of your physical body.

Remember you are limitless!

Warrior 3, or Virabhadrasana C, is an amazing balancing Asana to cultivate concentration and stabilize & strengthen the feet, ankles, hips, and abdominal muscles. With many arm variations to choose from, you can make this as challenging as you need.

Press down through the strong standing leg to create space in the hips, and notice if they become unbalanced. In photo 1, see the far hip raised.. and in photo 2, the hips more even after cueing to turn the hip down and point the top of the knee/toes to the floor.
