Underwear on the outside, faces in disguise, and music in the air โ€” the Mummers Parade in St. Johnโ€™s is pure Newfoundland magic. From handmade masks and ugly sticks to laughter echoing through Bowring Park, this tradition is all about community, creativity, and a little good-natured mischief.

November 11th carries a deep significance across the world โ€” a day when history, sacrifice, and peace converge. Known by many names โ€” Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Veteransโ€™ Day, or Poppy Day โ€” it serves as a collective pause to honour those who have served and sacrificed in times of war and conflict.

Though its traditions vary from country to country, the heart of the day remains the same: to remember.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, people around the world take a moment of silence to reflect โ€” to remember the courage, the loss, and the enduring hope for peace.

"We wear a poppy on Remembrance Day,
And at eleven we stand and pray.
Wreaths are put upon a grave,
As we remember our soldiers, brave."

The red poppy, inspired by the fields of Flanders, has become a universal symbol of remembrance โ€” a simple flower carrying a powerful message: Lest we forget.

As we wear our poppies and bow our heads this November 11th, may we not only remember the past but also look toward a future built on peace, gratitude, and unity.

On June 21st, St. Johnโ€™s came alive with music, ceremony, and community as First Light hosted its annual National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) celebration in Bannerman Park. The event honoured the rich and diverse histories, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, particularly those connected to this land we now call Newfoundland and Labrador.
