Canvassing the Neighbourhood Photography

Canvassing the Neighbourhood Photography Sharing photos from our travels. Canvassing the Neighbourhood Photography’s focus is capturing the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Enjoy!

We are two friends, one male, one female, using two different sides of our brains, with two different perspectives. Our goal is to capture the beauty of our Province. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for people to see what we see when we take our pictures. Life is too short to keep all this beauty to ourselves. If you like our photos and would like to make them your artwork we would be thrilled.

As June arrives, so does the opening of salmon season — bringing anglers back to the rivers before dawn. For many in Newfoundland, it’s a season measured not just by catches, but by tradition, patience, and time spent on the water. There’s nothing quite like the taste of real Atlantic salmon — rich, flaky, and shaped by the cold North Atlantic. Tight lines to all the salmon anglers — may the rivers be kind and the fish be plentiful.

In Newfoundland, fences were more than boundaries — they were built from necessity, marking gardens, keeping animals safe, and standing strong against harsh winds and rugged landscapes. Many old fences still tell quiet stories. I remember every summer, as a child, it was my job to paint our white fence. Over the years, we have captured many of these weathered landmarks. Good fences make good neighbours.

One busy mallard — every peep, paddle, and wandering duckling kept her busy on full-time mom duty. We watched the family after their swimming lesson in the rapids as they fluffed and shook their down feathers to dry off and stay warm. Before long, they tucked themselves under their mother’s feathers for warmth, comfort, and protection.

Another post about something that caught our eye: vintage eyebrow windows. We've only seen these twice in Newfoundland: the Bowring Park Bungalow and a house at 29 Monkstown Road. Their distinctive arched shape is both decorative and helps to bring extra light into attics. Keep your eye out, you might see one.

Winterholme, located on Rennies Mill Road in St. John's, is a Registered Heritage Structure. It was built between 1904 and 1906 as a residence costing $120,000, not cheap! What caught our eye this week while walking by the property was the curved wood clapboard siding/walls, and bow windows. You don't see craftsmanship like this anymore.
