The 2026 St. John’s Pride Festival kicked off Wednesday, and it feels like the perfect time to share something that’s been part of my business from the beginning.

ICYMI, I’m Margaret, a q***r wedding photographer. I’m always striving to make my business an inclusive space because I believe every couple deserves to feel seen, respected, celebrated and valued for who they are.

Here’s some of the ways I try to make people more comfortable in my business:

1. I use gender-neutral language.
You’ll see words like “partner” and “spouse” throughout my website and socials. I actually only use “bride” and “groom” once I know those are the appropriate titles.

2. I let the vibe determine how I pose and direct you – not gendered stereotypes.
I focus on photographing your personalities and your relationship.

3. I get involved in the community when I can – come find me at the Parade this year! I’ll be there with my camera ;)

4. I advocate for my clients and community.
I’ve been where you are. I’ve heard the homophobia and transphobia first-hand. I do not, and will not stand for it.

5. I don’t assume.
About your relationship, pronouns, family dynamics, or who’s changing their last name (if at all). It’s why my questionnaires are so in-depth!

6. I never stop learning.
Language evolves, practices evolve. I don’t pretend to know everything (and I’m probably going to be Googling it when I get home lol)
You deserve an inclusive vendor team!

7. I’ve built a forever-growing list of LGBTQ+-affirming wedding vendors across Newfoundland so my clients have trusted people to turn to throughout the wedding planning process. (Vendors, drop your q***r-owned business in the comments 👀)

8. Pride is all year round.
Q***r couples aren’t hidden in some separate gallery or only featured during Pride. Q***r love is a part of everyday life and that’s how it should be represented.

The St. John’s Pride Festival may only last a couple of weeks in July, but the community is here all year. Inclusive businesses are present every day through intentional choices, listening, and learning from the people whose voices need to be heard.

Anyways – see you at the Pride Parade! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I swear, this is the new “thanks! It has pockets!” Because I get complimented on this all the time and I basically get the same reaction.

And no it doesn’t tarnish. And yes it also comes in silver and rose gold. This isn’t an ad but I’m seriously obsessed with it! you nailed it! I better not be seeing any hair ties on anyone’s wrists at weddings ever again! 👀

Consider your candids handled.

In a lot of wedding inquiries and consult calls, I hear that candids are a big priority for couples. And (kind of a hot take coming) but you really can’t plan for them. They just happen. And a lot of the wedding photos out there that look candid- really aren’t. These ones though. These one are.

Some of my favourite candid moments from weddings last year have often come from me noticing something small and taking a photo. Either a small moment, a small action, anything that’s just a brief moment that brings a smile to my face.

Thoughts while taking some of these:
2 made me think “this is girlhood”
5 made me smile
7 made me laugh (and everyone else too). Shoutout
12 just made me melt and I’m so glad I saw it coming
