From now on I will only be posting photography related post on this page. Lately I've been posting a lot of 3d printing things and I want to keep them separate from this page. If anyone is interested in following my new 3d printing page click the link below. Me and Brian will be scanning or designing new items frequently to add to our new website.

Yesterday I 3d printed this 135mm tall Eiffel Tower with clear blue resin. This morning after cleaning and curing I setup my camera on manual with a 15 second exposure then used a small flashlight to light paint all around the model. It took a few tries to get the right exposure. This model has very good detail. It took over 9 hours to print.

These two photos show the smallest resin print I have ever done and the detail is pretty amazing. I wouldn't think this much detail could be retained in a print. This is a GI Joe Cobra WORMS Antenna. They are 11.8mm long and 1.18mm wide. I printed 8 as a test and they all turned out good. They were so small I had trouble locating them in the Isopropyl Alcohol wash bath. They are flexible and strong because I used ABS like resin to print them. Everyone have a Merry Christmas tomorrow. Hope Santa is good to you all.

Today I redesigned two items for my online store. After 3d scanning the original item there were marks or some damage so I had to do some repairs in my CAD software. This takes a fair bit of time to do this but I think they turned out reasonable. One is a Jitsu sword and the other a Spear Randor from Masters of the Universe. They are about 100mm and 140mm long. Printed them both in ABS like resin for strength and flexibility. Thanks to Brian for supplying the original items.

Brian and I have been working together to get my online store setup and running. He supplied most of the miniature items mostly Gi Joe or Masters of the universe. More to come later. I started by 3d scanning (some very difficult to scan) the items then doing any necessary repairs before printing with resin. The most difficult to scan and fix in cad software to print is this rope that I printed today. This fits onto the Gi Joe Wolverine vehicle. It took just over 8 hours to print because being 200mm in length had to be positioned upright at about 65° in the slicer software to properly print.

I've been doing a lot of resin 3d printing the past 2 weeks and today I had a chance to use clear blue resin. I printed this Lotus in clear blue as my first test. I have to dial in the settings a bit more but they were close. I didn't allow enough time for the print to dry before I cured it with the UV light so there are some white spots because of not being 100% dry. Besides that I think it came out reasonable for a test print. This is tricky resin to dial in for good print. I think I need an extra 0.5 of a second in the exposure time for each layer bumping up from 3 seconds to 3.5 seconds. One advantage of clear colour resin is you can put a small light behind or inside the print to light it up.

I like my resin 3d printer because the prints are so detailed and flawless compared to my filament printer. Resin printing is good for smaller detailed items. It is a lot more work thought. I need to wear a mask, nitrate gloves and safety glasses as a precaution. After the print is complete it has to be washed and supports removed. Then after the print has dried after washing it needs to be cured with a UV light. It seems like a lot of work but it's worth it in the end after seeing the results. The only other negative with resin is the higher cost and extra work post printing. It's roughly twice the cost of printing with filament. These 3 photos show how the printer works from start to finish.

A picture is worth 1000 words. I can think of one word, TASTY. My mom used to make these years ago. They are bacon buns. I made 6 for supper tonight. I cooked 6 strips of bacon, crispy, put a slice of cheese on each hamburger bun and cut up the bacon in pieces and placed them on each piece of cheese. The oven was on broil and it takes about 5 minutes. They are done when the cheese starts to melt and the buns starting to toast. Top it off with some ketchup. Much better than a grilled cheese sandwich.

Today I wanted to see if I could scan this glass angel. Looking at it is difficult to see any detail being so clear and reflective. This is 8" or 204mm tall. In order to scan this I had to use scanning spray which turns it white to make it able to be scanned. Glass or reflective objects can't be scanned without the use of scanning spray. I was amazed how it picked up all the detail compared to looking at the glass model. Now this could be 3d printed at any size and painted with Acrylic craft paints.

The other day I 3d scanned and printed these Cabbage Patch figurines and just finished painting with acrylic paints. I wanted to use a clear coat to make them look like glass or ceramic, but I found they are too reflective. Maybe a semi gloss would have been better. I should have left them with just the paint which was a flat look. A learning experience I guess.

Some people ask how 3d printers work. Here are two photos showing first the printed model using supports. The second is with the supports removed and cleaned up. Supports are needed when printing to be able to support overhanging areas. I scanned and am printing 4 of these figurines. We have four different Cabbage Patch figurines that are roughly 42 years old. This is an advantage of using a 3d scanner and printer to make copies of something that is no longer available. When I'm done printing the fourth figurine I will then paint them with acrylic paints. I'll show them after they are painted.

I scanned this Cardinal ornament to see if I could capture all the fine details. I was impressed with the final scan. I first used flat white scanning spray which helps to get an error free scan. It took three attempts to get it right. I started by scanning the top with one rotation then moving the scanner down twice to the bottom to be able to get all the hidden areas. This was a difficult scan because of all the features. I wanted to 3d print this but decided not to because it would take 18hr and 20 minutes being 140mm tall. Reducing the height to 75mm would reduce the time to about 4 hours. If printed with PLA+ this could be painted with acrylic paints after.
