The World's Smallest Dessert, or is it?

Carcross Desert is commonly referred to as a desert, but is actually a series of northern sand dunes. The area's climate is too humid to be considered a true desert.

The sand was formed during the last glacial period, when large glacial lakes formed and deposited silt. When the lakes dried, the dunes were left behind.

Today, sand comes mainly from nearby Bennett Lake, carried by wind. The dunes contain a wide variety of plants, including unusual species such as Baikal sedge (Carex sabulosa) and Yukon lupine, among others.

Is it the Lewes River or the Yukon River?

Well there is quite an interesting history on this.

"I don't care what the map says, Whitehorse sits on the Lewes River." Just an old timer looking for a good argument? Or is this the venting of some anti-American sentiment? Either way, Whitehorse sits on the Yukon River. It's been official since May 5, 1949. But not first without 100 years of politics, grandstanding and earnest mistakes.

Atlin British Columbia, a quaint lil community rich in history.

"On July 27, 1898 gold was discovered on Pine Creek. Soon word got out and triggered a stampede of hopeful gold miners. "As big as the Klondike" newspapers wrote. Before long, all the creeks in the Atlin area had been staked and a tent city had sprung up at the shore of Atlin Lake. The tents were soon replaced by buildings of all kinds, including saloons, hotels, brothels, restaurants, banks and stores."

White Pass and Yukon Route diesel locomotive #91 powers out of Carcross.

Locomotive #91 is a diesel-electric unit manufactured by General Electric Co. and produces 1,450 hp (1,080kW). It was built in June 1954. - wikipedia

"On July 21, 1898, two months after construction began, the railroad’s first engine went into service over the first four miles of completed track. The WP&YR was the northernmost railroad in the Western Hemisphere.
While construction crews battled their way north laying rail, another crew came from the north heading south and together they met on July 29, 1900 in Carcross where a ceremonial golden spike was driven by Samuel H. Graves, the president of the railroad."
