Epic Spring Birds, Toronto, 2016-2016.

Something funny happens after you spin the handle of manual coffee grinder enough times (about half million revolutions or so). That apex moment, which exists in the space between transcendental mindfulness and soul crushing boredom, brings forth the queerest ponderings; musings long buried but that resisted the decay of denial. For example... what was the first bird to be photographed? Is there a photograph of the last member of a bird species that went exciting? Why did i think a manual coffee grinder was a good idea? And... what kind of birds have i shot every Spring for the past 10 years? that one we can answer!

Spanning an entire decade, this little compilation covers images shot with every type of camera you can imagine: an APS-C (Olympus OM-D E-M10), several full frame cameras (a Nixon d300, a d750, a d810, a z6, and a sony a7r4), a medium format camera and even an iPhone 8. Can you tell which image was shot which which camera?

My favorite part of spring is the urgency in the leafs and blossoms, like an anxious pushback to defy and deny the cold and gray that came before it. Its a loud declaration that "despite all, I'm still here!" and that energy... it just gets inside and warms from within.

What makes an image great? It’s neither gear nor technique.

Disappointed client story, the explosive conclusion!… andddd … it was my fault in the end! But also not at all? It’s weird. This line of work is weird.

If you’ve been to or have considered therapy, then you’ve come across the maxim “it’s the relationship that heals”. Through collaboration and openness to vulnerability this relationship can reshape deeply held negative beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world; THAT is therapeutic! The maxim doesn’t imply that healing can only come from a mental health or medical professional—only that it cannot happen alone. The relation that heals can the relationship with our partner, play partner, or a circle of trusted friends, but we do need others to help us raise our awareness of our points of unnecessary suffering and achieve a deeper level of peace and self acceptance.

Where’s Carlos? | A long, long time ago… before AI, before even Generative Fill, there lived a boy who got tricked into paying 300 CAD for a free “boudoir” session. The boy gasped! “holy s**t that’s a little expensive for a 15 minute session but at least I’ll get ten shots out of this” but the lady controlling the computer said “that’s per image, sir”, as she sized him and up and down and made him feel even more naked than the had been 10 minutes before. Not wanting to look like a starving artist (which he very much was, despite appearances), he put out the credit card, prayed it wouldn’t bounce, and walked out, grateful for the experience but swearing to never put his clients in a situation where they either have to come up with indecent amounts of cash to purchase images on the spot, or experience the pain and grief of losing their images to deletion. Shame on top of shame. The moral of the story is, f**k capitalism. Real art is collaborative and accessible! Everyone deserves a great portrait of themselves and money should never get in the way of this. And what’s the story of the painting? That’s on the comments!
