🌙🦉 The Sleepy Branch Buddies 🦉🌙

Two beautiful Great Horned Owlets curled up together on a branch — one sitting tall, the other completely zonked out on his tummy — while Mom keeps a close, watchful eye from just a few feet away.

Most people don’t realize this, but baby owls often sleep on their bellies. Their heads are so big and heavy compared to the rest of their bodies that they can’t balance well enough to sleep standing yet. So when they’re truly, deeply asleep, they flop forward, stretch out, and snooze just like this little one — face down, wings relaxed, totally trusting the world around them.

His sibling beside him is just resting, still alert enough to stay upright…

but this little fluffball?

He’s in full dreamland.

A quiet branch.

A protective mother.

Two growing owlets learning the world one nap at a time.

🪺❤️ Daddy Duty Done Right ❤️🪺

A sweet little family moment —

Daddy Robin perched proudly at the nest, gently feeding his three hungry chicks.

Tiny beaks wide open, tiny voices chirping, and one very devoted father making sure everyone gets their turn.

🦌💚 The Return of Baby Hope 💚🦌

(Tongue out… just like his momma.)

Guess who just strutted back onto the summer grounds like he owns the place?

Baby Hope — the very first buck to return home this season.

And in true family fashion, he showed up with his tongue sticking out, proudly carrying on the signature look his momma made famous.

Seeing him again — taller, stronger, antlers starting to bud, but still with that same goofy, lovable attitude — felt like welcoming back an old friend. There’s something so special about watching these deer grow year after year, each one carrying a little piece of the ones who came before.

Hope isn’t just a returning buck.

He’s a reminder of resilience, of lineage, of the quiet beauty that lives in the Don.

And today, he made sure to announce his arrival with style… and a tongue-out grin that could melt anyone’s heart.

🌅🦆 The Golden‑Hour Goofball 🦆🌅

Some ducks pose like royalty…

and then there’s this guy — the male Wood Duck who decided golden hour was the perfect time to make the silliest face imaginable.

With the water glowing in rich hues of gold, orange, and soft pink, he lifted his head, puffed himself up, and gave me a look that can only be described as quorky chaos. Those neon feathers, that glossy green crest, and that expression — somewhere between “Did you bring snacks?” and “I run this pond” — made the whole scene unforgettable.

Wood Ducks are already some of the most stunning birds in North America, but catching one being a total goofball in perfect evening light?

That’s the kind of magic the wild saves for people who show up with an open heart.

🌿👀 The Three Little Forest Goblins 👀🌿

There are moments in the woods that feel like they were scripted just for you — soft, surprising, and so full of wonder they melt you on the spot.

I was walking quietly through the bush when I spotted a single, full‑sized Eastern Screech Owl perched in a tree. Calm. Beautiful. Watching me with that wise, steady gaze only screech owls can pull off. I eased in just a little, keeping a respectful distance, just hoping for a better look without disturbing this tiny guardian of
the forest.

And then…

a tiny crack.

A little broken twig dropped straight onto my hat.

I froze.

Looked up.

And there they were.

Three freshly fledged screech owlets — tiny, fluffy, wide‑eyed nuggets of pure magic — all lined up on a branch above me, staring down like a trio of curious woodland judges. Their little heads bobbled in perfect unison, trying to figure out what strange creature had wandered beneath their tree.

My heart didn’t just melt — it puddled.

To see one screech owl is special.
To see three babies, newly out of the nest, all peering down at you with that mix of innocence and mischief… that’s the kind of moment the forest gives you once in a lifetime.

A tiny family.

A tiny surprise.

And a memory that will glow in my chest for years.

🌲💛 The Pine‑Tree Trouble Twins 💛🌲

Some wildlife encounters stay with you forever — not because they were rare, but because they felt personal.

A few days ago, tucked deep in a quiet pine, I found myself being inspected by not one, but two young Great Horned Owls… and oh, did they ever make it clear that I was the one being watched.

They sat side by side on a thick branch, those big, blazing yellow eyes locked onto me with that classic owl mix of suspicion and curiosity.

Two little sentinels of the forest.

Two mischievous souls I’ve had the joy of watching grow from tiny, awkward fluff balls into the majestic, confident troublemakers they are now.

There’s something incredibly moving about seeing them like this — perched high, alert, powerful, and yet still carrying that spark of the babies they once were. Watching them grow has felt like being part of a quiet, secret story the forest let me witness.

Moments like this remind me why I keep going back out there:

because sometimes, the wild looks right back at you… and it feels like a gift.

P.S - Can you believe such beautiful wildlife can be found right here in Toronto

🐦🐢 The Day the Blackbird Bowed to the Turtle 🐢🐦

Well… I’ve seen a lot of things on the trails, but this one might take the cake.

A blackbird standing on a log beside a turtle, leaning forward in what can only be described as a full, respectful bow — like he’s greeting the ancient ruler of the pond.

That’s right.

Bow to the turtle.

The times have officially changed.

For once, the blackbird — the same bird that usually spends its day attacking anything that breathes, blinks, or even thinks about moving — has decided to show a little humility. No dive‑bombing. No screaming. No chaos. Just a polite little nod to the slow, armored monarch beside him.

Maybe he finally realized who really runs the wetlands.

Maybe he’s asking for forgiveness for years of unprovoked aerial assaults.

Or maybe… just maybe… he knows better than to mess with a creature that looks like it’s been around since the dinosaurs.

Whatever the reason, it was hilarious, unexpected, and absolutely perfect — a tiny moment where nature flipped the script and gave the turtle the royal treatment it deserves.

Long live the turtle king.

🪺❤️ A Mother’s Love in Feathers ❤️🪺

There’s nothing sweeter than witnessing a moment of pure devotion in the wild — and this mother Robin feeding her three hungry chicks was one of those scenes that stops you right in your tracks.

She perched on the edge of the nest, chest puffed with purpose, worms in her beak, doing what mothers do best: giving everything she has to the little lives depending on her. The chicks stretched their necks up as far as they could, beaks wide, tiny voices begging for just one more bite. And she delivered, again and again, with the patience and tenderness only a mother can show.

Robins are some of the most familiar birds in our city, but moments like this remind us just how incredible they really are. They build their nests with care, raise multiple broods each season, and work tirelessly from sunrise to sunset to feed their young. Every chick in that nest is a small miracle — a reminder of the new life spring brings and the quiet strength of the parents who make it possible.

A beautiful family moment, a hardworking mother, and a nest full of hope.

🌸 A Nest Full of Hope: Yellow Warbler Chicks 🐣

Spring is officially in full swing, and our local parks are bursting with new life! Check out these beautiful baby yellow warblers tucked into a stunning backdrop of cherry blossoms, eagerly awaiting their next meal.

As beautiful as nesting season is, it’s also the most vulnerable time for our local bird populations. When photographing or viewing nests, remember to always prioritize the safety of the wildlife:

Keep your distance: Use a telephoto lens to avoid distressing the parents or chicks.

Limit your time: Don't linger too long near a nest, as it can draw unwanted attention from predators or cause the parents to abandon it.

Leave the surroundings natural: Never move branches or foliage to get a "clearer shot"—that cover is what keeps them safe!

Let's enjoy the beauty of the season responsibly and keep our urban wild spaces safe for the next generation. 🌿
