A lot of people don't know that about 99% of the collections the ROM has aren't on display. They are categorized and studied by the scientists who work there.

Collecting and studying these specimens is important because this research is how scientists confirm the discovery of a new species, learn new facts about the past and challenge ideals we previously thought to be true. In some cases, the collections are so old that you can actually see how a species has evolved over time!

This entomology display is just a very small sampling of the larger collection. The labels and categories allow for the species to be identified and show where it came from as well. Scientists use this information to identify trends around the world.

It is collections such as this allows science to continue to learn and develop. As much as some people would like to think humans know everything, that couldn't be further from the truth. Constantly learning new things within a collection helps expand that knowledge base!!!

Field Trip (4/4)

These shots show just a couple of my classmates in action during our field trip. The day allowed us to capture video, photos and interviews of the EM faculty and students. As a class we worked together to produce several deliverables for the City of Toronto to use in an effort to shed light on this partnership and the work it's is doing. Educating the public about the dune ecosystems is vital to its survival. Using these deliverables will help do this and helpfully help preserve such a beautiful area!!!

Field Trip (3/4)

This trip to Hanlan's Point was in partnership with the Environmental Management (EM) program at Fleming College. The students were working to restore some of the areas around the sand dunes, planting native plants and removing invasive plants. The EM program has had a partnership with the City of Toronto for the past 13 years, to maintain and improve the ecosystem surrounding Hanlan's Point. This was the first year my class, the Environmental Visual Communications class was invited along to capture the day. It was a great day full of learning, rain and meeting new people!

Field Trip (2/4)

Further into the island, we were delighted to discover all the different forms of nature surrounding us. Seeing as the area around Hanlan's Point is a very popular for walking trails and other outdoor activities, I wasn't sure if we would see anything interesting...boy was I wrong! We found everything from snakes to snails, from birds to brush! It was a really great experience, being able to capture the day and all that nature had to offer!!!

Field Trip (1/4)

A few weeks ago I went on a class trip to the Toronto Island to capture a day of restoration on the sand dunes at Hanlan's Point. Upon arrival this is what greeted us on the beach. Because of the positioning of this beach, facing mainland Toronto, there is so much garbage that washes up here. Something as small as a chocolate bar wrapper is very easy to discard and not think about, but we have to remember what happens to that wrapper after we throw it away. It continues to mess with the ecosystem and can cause quit a bit of damage to those living in it!

Always make sure to dispose of your waste the correct way, to help protect all creatures sharing this space with us.

Shoreline clean ups are so important in preventing fishing gear getting washed back out to sea. Make sure you check out what your local community is doing to clean it's shores!!! 🏖️🌊⛱️

An Empire state of mind 🍎

Every year my family and I go apple picking and every year it's a blast (no matter how old we get)!!! It's such a great way to have a fun day out in the community, supporting a local business. This year we picked Empire apples and they ended up being sooo good!! In fact they were so tart and crisp that we ended up eating most of them before we even got to baking any pies... No regrets!!!

A casual hang...🥂

When asked to choose my favorite item on display at the ROM, I had quite a difficult time because there are so many cool and unique things to pick from. So instead of picking one single item, I decided to choose my favorite display. The French Salon in the Rococo style is my favorite display at the ROM. The room dates back to about 1735 and is typical of what one might fine in an upper-class home in Paris. The attention to detail in everything from the China to the wall carvings is a total contradiction to what interior decorating is today… and this room is considered a casual salon! Everything in the space is meant to encourage casual conversation all while being luxury goods, specifically made for the members of high society. I love this room because it shows just how much effort was put into presentation at the time and how much society has evolved in the past 200 years.

It's harvest time!!! 🍁

Farmers Markets are a great way to support local businesses, help the environment and find some really great food. Over the course of the summer and beginning of fall, people come from all over come to sell their in season fruits and veggies. You never know who you might meet and the stories you might hear. Find a market near you and get ready to experience the freshness of farm to table living!!!
