Just two months after Uzbekistan ended a 40-year photography ban in the Tashkent Metro, I stepped into Kosmonavtlar Station — a tribute to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. I was grateful for the chance to photograph a location so few had seen, captivated by the shimmering blues and the story of a young woman who once orbited the Earth alone at age 26 although most people have never heard of her. I captured a fleeting moment on the platform: the conductor in her blue uniform and bright red hat sits poised, ready to guide the next wave of passengers safely aboard. I would have loved to use a tripod, but with security watching closely, I shot handheld in the low light and made it work.

Exhibition News !! I'm honoured to have my image Cuban Barber included in an exhibition in Greenport, New York this weekend.
It's the inaugural exhibition of the BarTur Photo Award at the North Fork Arts Center, showcasing photographers from 23 countries.
It's on Saturday, June 14 from 3-4pm with an artist talk featuring Kate Bubacz, Head of Visuals at Rest of World, James Wellford, Senior Photo Editor for Global Issues at National Geographic Magazine, and Amnon Bar-Tur, founder of the BarTur Award, photographer, curator, and entrepreneur.

As we make the final preparations to launch our *NEW GRANT* this January, we have been enjoying looking back on all the fantastic winners over the last 9 editions of the BarTur Photo Award.

This is the fantastic work by Kelly Beckta (Kelly Beckta Photography) 'Cuban Barber' which was one of our many favourites from 2022 award. This work was awarded ‘WINNER' in the 'Faces of Humanity: Single Image' category.

This new grant, opening soon, is dedicated to empowering photographers like Kelly by providing grants and resources to support the creation of compelling documentary photo essays that address urgent social, environmental, economic, and cultural issues of our time.

There is one cash grant prize of $30,000 to complete an in-progress project as well as two $5000 emerging photographer grants.

Kelly Beckta is a Canadian freelance photographer who has captured incredible images in over 100 countries across six continents over the last 34 years. Humanity is seen in her work, most likely influenced by her 27-year career as a registered nurse which has taken her to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Poland and the United Kingdom. During that journey she was able to travel extensively and teach herself the art of photography with a human touch, bringing forward the remarkable qualities of her subjects from around the globe.

This barber in Havana, Cuba, has set up a shop in the same building where he lives. He has managed to hook up water and electricity and has a steady flow of clients.

Does this look like a nature photography shoot in Norway? It’s actually an experience everyone can have at Tromso Arctic Reindeer. My passion for travel and photography are intrinsically tied together, so yes my friends were feeding the reindeer while I was more obsessed with getting a great shot









“Imagine this: 12 adventurous souls from Qatar, Canada, the UK, and France descend upon Tromsø, Norway in December, uniting to celebrate a monumental birthday! 🎉 In a land where daylight plays hide-and-seek, appearing for a mere 3-4 hours each day, we embarked on a quest for the ultimate Arctic experience. ❄️✨

The Arctic reindeer in Tromsø, Norway 🦌✨ were a must see on my list. Tromso Arctic Reindeer is a family run business, I love supporting local and everyone their was lovely. During this experience we got to immerse ourselves in the rich culture and traditions of this Sami reindeer herding family, who have been living and working with these majestic creatures for generations. We loved the reindeer sledding ride, tasting traditional Sami cuisine inside a cozy gamme, and we were captivated by stories and joking around a crackling campfire.
