6:30 AM, blocked at the river crossing!

Impossible to cross the Talek River: a gigantic giraffe (well, you're going to tell me that a giraffe is never really small anyway!) was blocking our way. We still had the rear wheels of the Land Cruiser in the water when she already seemed to be telling us: "You shall not pass!" (For the reference, go ask Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings!). All that was missing was a pack of Orcs right behind her!!!

Anyway, after 10 minutes of staring each other down, wondering "should I cross or should I not?", she finally decided to let us through.

On the other side, we had a rendezvous with the 5 Rongai brothers. We had followed them for a large part of the day yesterday because we knew they were going to hunt. Bad luck! They hunted and killed a buffalo during the night… As a result, we were left with nothing but the bones to pick!

6 h 30, bloqués au passage de la rivière !

Impossible de traverser la Talek River : une gigantesque girafe (bon, vous allez me dire qu'une girafe, ce n'est jamais vraiment petit !) nous bloquait le passage. Nous avions encore les roues arrière du Land Cruiser dans l'eau qu'elle semblait déjà nous dire : "Vous ne passerez pas !" (Pour la référence, allez demander à Gandalf dans Le Seigneur des Anneaux !). Manquerait plus qu'il y ait des Orcs derrière elle !!!

Bref, après 10 minutes à se regarder dans les yeux en se disant "je passe ou je passe pas ?", elle a fini par se décider à nous laisser le chemin.

De l'autre côté, nous avions rendez-vous avec les 5 frères de la Rongai. Nous les avions suivis une grande partie de la journée d'hier car nous savions qu'ils allaient chasser. Pas de bol ! Ils ont chassé et tué un buffle pendant la nuit… Résultat, nous n'avions plus que les os à ronger !

More fire in the Mara…

I won't give you a lecture on bushfires and controlled burning in the Masai Mara, I’ll just refer you back to one of my posts from two weeks ago with the elephant (and BAM!).

This time around, it was a giraffe, four lions, a serval, etc. Once again, no time to write long updates, just enjoy the photos!

Encore du feu au Mara…

Je ne vais pas vous faire un cours sur l'écobuage au Masai Mara, je vous renvoie à l'un de mes posts d'il y a deux semaines avec l'éléphant (et Paf !).

Cette fois-ci, c'était une girafe, quatre lions, un serval, etc. Encore une fois, pas le temps de vous écrire de longs textes, profitez des images !

Same player, shoot again! (or: Here we go again!)

Our "little beast" Faulu graced us with some magnificent poses at sunset. Insane light! Started at 64 ISO and ended up at 8000, as it was almost 7:00 p.m. I think she’s going to finish off her prey tonight.

Notre "petite bête" Faulu nous a gratifiés de magnifiques poses au soleil couchant. Une lumière de fou ! Commencé à 64 ISO pour finir à 8000 alors qu'il était presque 19 h 00. Je pense qu'elle va finir sa proie cette nuit.

Faulu, the star of the Mara!

Faulu is the favorite leopard of our area, and she’s got a reputation that would make Brigitte Bardot look like a complete stranger! After yesterday’s performance where she put on quite a show, we left her up in her tree with her menu.

This morning it was written in the stars: we were supposed to arrive by 6 a.m. to photograph her in her tree, watch her climb down, and the whole nine yards!

Well, think again! We found her right in the middle of the main road, a kilometer away from her tree, casually taking her morning stroll, looking as stuffed as a loukoum. As it turned out, she had already eaten half of her Thomson's gazelle.

Anyway, there was quite a crowd at the rendezvous, and after taking a quick look around, she decided, plain and simple, to push more than two meters deep into a massive bush.

I managed to locate her. It was still a bit dark, and the sun hadn't risen yet. With the 400mm, I switched to manual focus, managed to lock onto her eye, and boom—it's in the bag!

This allows me to answer those who often ask: “Why do you still have a support mount on the side of your car? With stabilized sensors and modern lenses, you don't need one anymore!” Well, I’m old school. In the morning, or whenever I can, I shoot between 50 and 110 ISO. To do that, I have to drop my shutter speeds to crazy low levels because there isn't enough daylight. So, I need absolute stability to avoid any camera shake.

For the first photo, for example, I was at 400mm, f/2.8, 1/40th of a second, and 110 ISO! Many will tell you that it’s impossible. Upon request, I can send them a screenshot of the EXIF data, no problem at all!

Anyway, the rascal finally came out after a good hour of waiting. Deciding there were way too many cars around, she drove everyone nuts by making two round trips, before heading right back to sleep in the very same bush… and BOOM!

Faulu la star du Mara !
Faulu est le léopard fétiche de notre secteur, et elle a une notoriété qui ferait passer Brigitte Bardot pour une inconnue ! Après la journée d’hier où elle nous a fait tout un show, nous l’avions laissée dans son arbre avec son menu.
Ce matin c’était écrit dans le ciel , dès 6 h, nous devions arriver pour la photographier dans son arbre, la voir descendre, et tout le toutim !
Eh bien NON ! Nous l’avons retrouvée en plein milieu de la route principale, à 1 km de son arbre, en train de se taper sa marche du matin, grosse comme un loukoum.
Après vérification, elle a déjà mangé la moitié de sa gazelle de Thomson.
Bref, il y avait beaucoup de monde au rendez vous et près avoir fait un petit tour d’horizon, elle a décidé ni plus ni moins de s’enfoncer de plus de deux mètres dans un buisson énorme.
J’arrive à la localiser. Il fait encore un peu sombre, le soleil n’est pas encore levé.
Au 400mm, je passe en focus manuel, j’arrive à choper son œil et paf, c’est dans la boîte !
Cela me permet de répondre aux gens qui me posent souvent la question : « Pourquoi as-tu encore un support sur le côté de ta voiture ? Avec les capteurs stabilisés et les nouveaux objectifs, on n'en a plus besoin ! » Eh bien moi, je suis de la vieille école. Le matin, ou dès que je le peux, je photographie entre 50 et 110 ISO. Pour cela, je dois descendre mes vitesses à des niveaux de fou car la lumière du jour est insuffisante. J’ai donc besoin d’une stabilité maximale pour éviter tout flou de bougé.
Pour la première photo par exemple, je suis au 400mm à f/2.8, au 1/40ème de seconde et à 110 ISO ! Beaucoup vous diront que ce n’est pas possible. Sur demande, je peux leur envoyer une capture d’écran avec les EXIFS, ça ne me pose aucun problème !
Bref, la bougresse est enfin sortie après une bonne heure d’attente. Estimant qu’il y avait beaucoup trop de voitures, elle a fait tourner tout le monde en bourrique en faisant deux allers-retours, avant de retourner se coucher dans le même buisson… et PAF !

A full day with "Faulu". True, it involved a lot, a lot of waiting, but she really put on a show! She hoisted a Thomson's gazelle up into the tree early this morning. She is still just as beautiful, just as captivating… and so small, almost tiny. She is definitely the smallest female leopard in the Masai Mara! In fact, I affectionately nickname her "my little beast".

A Bateleur eagle and a Tawny eagle came to help themselves to her prey while madame was sleeping, which kept us well entertained during the long wait this afternoon. Her schedule for the day: eating, climbing down, napping, climbing back up, and eating again!

As for Akira, no news, and even less so for Nataana. I'm still searching. No time to write more, the days in the field are long. I'm heading to bed.

Une journée complète avec "Faulu".

Certes, avec beaucoup, beaucoup d'attente, mais elle a fait le show ! Elle a hissé une gazelle de Thomson dans l'arbre tôt ce matin. Elle est toujours aussi belle, aussi captivante… et aussi petite, presque minuscule.

C'est certainement la plus petite femelle léopard du Masai Mara ! Je la surnomme d'ailleurs affectueusement "ma petite bête".

Un aigle batelier et un Aigles ravisseur sont venus se servir sur sa proie pendant que madame dormait, ce qui nous a bien occupés pendant la longue attente de l'après-midi. Au programme de sa journée : repas, descente, sieste, remontée et re-repas !

Pour Akira, aucune nouvelle, et encore moins de Nataana. Je cherche toujours. Pas le temps d'écrire plus, les journées sur le terrain sont longues. Je file au lit.

Une chose plutôt rare, une photo côté pile et côté face (en tout cas pour la prise de vue !).
Un coucher de soleil comme un autre au Mara… Mais cette fois-ci, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise de recevoir en message privé, de la part du photographe Cedric Favero la même scène mais prise de l'autre côté ! Me voilà donc photographié à l'insu de mon plein gré, lol !
