Thinking back on simpler and more visually expansive times. When all I had to worry about was staying cool, hydrated and keeping up with the crew in the mountains of the Peninsula.

Remembering a time when a group of us took a 12 hr taxi ride across much of Morocco. The beauty was only tempered by the frequent stops to fill up our empty radiator and the haggling of whether or not our taxis would go “off-piste” to our destination. We ultimately made it to our desert bivouac by midnight only to have our bags held as insurance until our drivers received their off-roading fee.

Some great & very specific tips for any teams going to compete in the upcoming Eco Challenge from someone who was there in 2002.

I raced the original Eco-Challenge Fiji in 2002. We were an average team that accomplished amazing things. 81 teams started the race and by the time we crossed

If these canyons & mesas could speak, I am certain that they would demand that the land before them be protected. During my few days exploring this unique terrain in southern Utah with our group, we - and the group that followed us - found plenty of evidence of why it should be. The desert and I have had a complicated relationship. It has unceremoniously filled my tent with 3 inches of its’ sand, pecked at my sunburnt face and momentarily blinded me during one of its storms. Be it the Sahara, The Empty Quarter or the Musandam, I’m constantly drawn to this landscape to glimpse its beauty but also to understand its hardships. Hardships that many local individuals, especially in the Sahara, endure on a daily basis - imagine that your only source of clean drinking water is kilometres away, accessible only on foot and you must cross an expansive dune field to get to it.

I take my hat off to the organizations that help people, families and communities across the globe face this constant challenge.

Adventure Science is honored to have recently been recognized with a Merit Award by the Canada Shorts Film Festival for our latest documentary film ‘Beyond Roads’. To check out the official trailer for the film, please visit the Adventure Science YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/NxCs-SH1zfo

Beyond Roads is an expedition of discovery. The short film follows the Adventure Science team of Dr. Simon Donato, Gemita Samarra, Mike Chambers, Jim Mandelli and 秦諾 as they travel to the remote Musandam peninsula at the northern tip of Oman in order to study tsunami deposits and undiscovered archaeological sites. The team was dropped by fishing boat at the northern most tip of the peninsula and hiked over 50 kilometers through the isolated, rugged, desolate, and beautiful mountains of the Musandam to return to civilization in the town of Khasab.

Huge thanks to Chris Shane and Luis Moreira who were along to shoot the project and to Merrell for helping to make the project happen! 📸 by: Chris M Shane ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- After mashing your hands paddling 100km+ for over 24hrs straight, you deserve a few days to rest and heal up, right? Well, not in some adventure races… During the Eco-challenge North American Championship in 2003 teams came off of an epic paddling section - it began on the Michipicoten River, then travelled down the entire coast of Lake Superior Provincial park, and didn’t end until teams were a few kms upstream on the Montreal River - only to then have to assemble their bikes for a 150km+ ride. Many teams opted to take a short rest and refuel before continuing a few others decided they had come far enough.

Adventurer and activist, , enjoys a break from exploring the furthest reaches of the Musandam Peninsula. She was part of the team that explored and successfully traversed the region during the "Beyond Roads" Expedition.

Gemita will be heading to the Turkey/Syrian border in less than a week to work on a refugee humanitarian project undertaken by her organization. It sounds like a challenging and worthwhile endeavour so take a look and lend some support.

If you're interesting in seeing more from the project then check out a trailer for our short doc. Link in the bio above.
