Eid Mubarak 💫 to my Muslim brothers and sisters

A difficult one for many in the world this year as missiles and drones target many countries in the Middle East. Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem also remains closed, one of the holiest sites for Muslims, making impossible conditions for Palestinians even worse during what should be a time of celebration. Not since 1967 has access been denied, adding further pain to their plight.

But I know brighter times are ahead, so sending love and strength to all communities struggling with danger, fear and despair. Billions around the world are with you 🙏

With the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei over the weekend, Iran, the Middle East and the wider world enters a new era.

A Persian taxi driver in Vancouver once told me that we would see much wider peace if the Iranian regime was removed since they sponsor so much terrorism across the world.

While I don’t agree with the lack of congressional approval, negotiating while planning the attack and total disregard for international law by the USA, it is clear Khamenei was an evil man who finally got what was coming to him. One who slaughtered his own people multiple times over the decades to squash any dissent. While funding several terrorist groups whose whole mantra was solely to destroy Israel. Imagine if that money had gone towards the Iranian people instead…

I do fear for further chaos in the coming months and pray for the Iranian people. The US doesn’t exactly have a good track record with these types of operations and there seems to be no clear plan ahead by the US government.

So I pray for our Persian brothers and sisters, I pray for their safety from US and Israeli bombs, from crackdown and instability within the country as the regime tries to maintain control. But mostly just pray for a more positive better future, one that they deserve after decades of oppression. There are brighter days ahead 🙏☀️

Happy Family Day ❣️

To all the sisters, brothers, mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, grandparents and friends who feel like family, be thankful for everybody in your life that brings joy to your day. And sometimes not joy too 😂😂

But that’s family…there for the ups and downs 🙏

Sometimes I just look back and feel so blessed to have seen so much beauty that our planet has to offer. I read too much news, and it’s such a negative place to spend time (even more so recently).

But stepping away from all that and just being present in nature and meeting new people always reminds me how lucky we are to live on Earth. And making the most out of the limited time we have on this rotating ball of magma.

I try to do the bare minimum research when planning a travel itinerary. Flights, a place to stay and some highlights to decide I want to visit, while letting the rest unfold when I arrive.

I took these photos my very first evening in Palau. I literally went for a walk and stumbled upon this bay around the corner from where I was staying. It was an insane sunset, locals playing basketball, kids jumping into the water and families pushing strollers. I was stunned right away by its beauty and continued to fall in love with the country and its people over the next few weeks.

Again the Iranian regime has blood on its hands as it moves to using lethal force on its own citizens. Any regime that needs to kill its own people to maintain power should not be in power. No matter what part of the world you are in.

Governments are meant to support and allow its people to prosper, and create a safe environment for open discourse when it is felt that is not happening. This seems to be disintegrating around the world at the moment and it is a disheartening time for the good people of this planet who are by far the majority.

I pray for the safety of the Iranian people regardless of the outcome of their protests.

Photos taken from the Mahsa Amini protests in Toronto a few years back. Let’s hope these deaths are not in vain and there is a better future ahead, without bloodshed.

❣️to all my Persian friends

The third post I ever made on Instagram was a post of the fish tank behind the bar at Imperial Pub in 2014 taken on probably an iPhone 4 (before I even had this account).

Like many others, I was saddened to hear of the closing of the Imperial Pub when it was announced. There really aren’t many places that compare to the uniqueness of it.

Toronto does such a bad job of maintaining anything historic in this city. Honest Ed’s was another classic example.

Developers see short term profits, not understanding the importance of community and places that are affordable to hang out and make up the fabric of the city.

So of course I had to go on the closing night Saturday to take in the vibe and it was a great night. A jolly atmosphere permeated all corners: from the Library upstairs, karaoke session in the back and the buzzing front of the pub.

Here are some snaps documenting the celebration of life the community had for the famous pub, the final one after 81 years.

Now look, yes it’s only a pub, and student housing is going up…but we have an imploding condo market and a teetering Canadian economy. Can’t we just have a no frills pub not trying to be anything else other than a simple hangout spot for good people to enjoy a beer or drink amongst friends?
