Not everything a bride wears is new.
Some things have been waiting decades for their next chapter.
Mishi’s Mehndi look carried pieces of her mother’s wedding clothes that had been preserved in Pakistan since the late ’90.
Her mother’s gharara was transformed into elements of Mishi’s lehenga and choli, while the original dupatta was kept untouched. And the jewellery? Her mother’s too, originally given to her by her parents and worn by generations of women in their family.
From mother to daughter. From one wedding to another.
This is why I love photographing South Asian weddings. Beyond the colour, fashion and celebration are histories like this; family heirlooms, traditions and pieces carrying the stories of the women who came before us.
And that mehndi against the fuchsia, emerald green and vintage details? Everything. ✨
