When was the last time you took a moment to slow down?⁣

To be present?⁣

To get in touch with nature?⁣

At times, it may seem as if our world is spinning so fast we can't catch our breath.⁣

Here’s the thing.⁣

We can't stop the world from spinning, or control things external to us and therein lies the secret. ⁣

Although we can't control our external world, we can choose how we react to each external element that puts pressure on us.⁣

If the world is feeling like it’s starting to spin faster than you can run, I’d like to invite you to a FREE meditation group I facilitate every Friday. We meditate, we journal and then we connect as a community of kind creative humans. The link is in my bio or you can follow . ⁣

There’s a lot going on in the world and sometimes carving out a little time just for you and your heart can make all the difference. ⁣

Big Love,⁣

D⁣

🔥 The Power of TEAM. → There’s a part of me that just wants to do everything alone.

“It’s faster on my own. It’s easier too. And lord knows it’s cheaper.”

^ That’s what the voice says.

Sometimes I listen. But more than ever before, I am realizing the power of team.

Yes, it takes time to get everyone trained and working towards a united vision.

Yes, it costs me money… but also it doesn’t. Because by carefully hiring people with complementary skills, I free up my time to do the things that bring the most value into my business and my life.

I’m not going to lie to you: at first it was hard for me, especially when I was so used to doing everything solo. And working with a team put me face to face with my perfectionism, which can be paralyzing at times.

Uniting many people with many different skills and perspectives into one cohesive team requires a commitment to my vision. A commitment to doing things differently, and taking several steps backwards in order to build a solid foundation for me to move forward.

It’s also humbling to see how much my communication skills need to grow. I’ve got a long way to go, but I am so grateful to all the incredible humans on my team who are so talented, caring and kind.

This photo is my Mini HEARTshots team from Jan 2022:

When was the last time you played?⁣

I mean did something purely just for fun without it being linked to any outcome?⁣

Play is special because it is not goal-oriented like most of what we do as adults.⁣

It’s about exploring and pursuing joy without thinking about outcomes.⁣

It means doing things that make us happy and bring us joy without having to worry about getting ahead or achieving any particular goals.⁣

We can sometimes be under so much pressure as adults that we think we'll lose out if we don't maximize every minute of every day. But if we’re not mindful of it, we may find ourselves at a point where we don’t have the time (or forget) to have fun. ⁣

We used to play all the time as kids. Remaining in the present was easy when there was no pressure. Think back to your childhood. What were your favourite ways to play? Chances are you still enjoy a version of those things.⁣

Find ways to bring them back into your life.⁣

It may be uncomfortable at first, but it's important to learn how to play again.⁣

Take a deep breath and get out from behind your desk today.⁣

Take some time to play.⁣

Go on a walk without an agenda.⁣

Take an afternoon to just do whatever. ⁣

Your inner child will thank you for it.⁣

Big Love,⁣

I am super curious: what are your questions about photography?⁣

Are there any things you are interested in learning about taking photos?⁣

(Either in front of or behind the camera.)⁣

Are there any aspects of photography that excite you? If not, what makes you nervous and hesitant?⁣

Maybe I can help. During the past years, I've taken over 600,000 photos of humans and learned a lot along the way.⁣

If you are brave enough to ask a question, I promise I will send you a DM with my best answer.⁣

While I am not an expert in everything related to photography, I have learned a lot and will likely have something helpful to share with you.⁣

Looking forward to connecting.⁣

Big Love,⁣

🖤 We made it. That’s a fact.

Two years ago today, the whole world shut down.

This was not easy. There were many really scary parts. It’s still often scary AF.

But if you’re reading these words today, you made it to this point. That’s a fact.

You did whatever you had to do to get here. And before I get back to building out my future, before I put on my cup-is-half-full, silver lining glasses, I want to take a moment to acknowledge all of us for what we’ve been through.

If you have a moment today, I’d like to invite you to take three deep breaths and reflect on how much our world has changed in the past 24 months. And if you’re open to it, take a moment to acknowledge what it took us to get here.

It’s hard for me to look back. I’d much rather focus on the future, especially when the past has so many soft spots and painful memories. But in this moment, it’s not about good or bad memories. It’s just an acceptance that all of our lives have been forever changed.

All of us, no matter what our beliefs, have been impacted deeply.

Even though we might be scared, we are also resilient and resourceful.

And when we pay close attention, despite all the chaos and uncertainty, we will find places in our lives where we are stronger, more rooted and maybe even more free.

We have survived some of the most uncertain times in human history.

And we made it. That’s a fact.

Hope is a precious gem. ⁣

It’s very rare to find these days. ⁣

It takes courage to allow yourself to feel hope. ⁣

It takes even more courage to express and share your hopefulness with others. ⁣

If you are not careful there are people who will try and grind your hopefulness down to oblivion. ⁣

AND⁣

There are also many people out there who will see your hope and rejoice. ⁣

They too are collectors of hope. ⁣

My dear friend Tarzan happens to be such a collector. ⁣

Each time I speak with her I somehow walk away with 20 more hope gems stuffed in my pockets. ⁣

Love you T! ⁣

I can’t wait for our next dance. :)⁣

Big love,⁣

📷 Where it all began...

Here’s a throwback to my first ever black and white portrait and my first ever write-up reflecting on the process. Looking back, I see a young and curious artist about to fall head over heels in love with a new lifelong obsession.

11/16/2016 - PORTRAIT #001 - MAJID "MACH" HASHEMI

The most memorable moment during the shoot was when I let Mach take a look at the first few photos. It was so I could show him what was working and where there was room for improvement. His curiosity and his fascination with the "different versions" of himself—as seen through the lens—left an impression on me.

This shoot gives me confidence that there is something very special in this style of black and white portrait photography and that the Universe wants me here.

There is only one thing we truly own while we are here on Earth.⁣

And that is our perception.⁣

Our perception is completely unique to us. No one ever, anywhere, will ever have the exact same perception of reality as we do because there are no two people whose lives have been exactly the same.⁣

Every circumstance is given to us either to help us heal an unresolved part of ourselves or to challenge a limited belief system, enabling us to always see the silver lining in every situation.⁣

What do you see?⁣

Do you see clutter? Do you see possibilities?⁣

Do you see stress? Do you see joy?⁣

Do you see regret? Do you see hope?⁣

Take time to clear your mind, listen to the wind in the trees and rush a little less. It’s good for the heart to put some effort into seeing the world from different angles. In the end, only you know if you are living in alignment with your values.⁣

Ask yourself what truly counts in your life.⁣

And don’t be afraid to shine bright, my friend.⁣

Big love,⁣

Dear Little D,

I love your little mushroom haircut.

I love how silly and playful you get.

I also love you when you are quiet or scared.

The next time you feel scared, remember that you don’t need to figure things out on your own.

I’m here too. And I will always be here for you. Always. Always. Always.

There are a lot of others here for you as well. They also love and care for you a lot.

I know this can feel scary or overwhelming at times, because it’s been just you and me for a long time.

But if you are open to it, maybe it’s time to let a few other people in as well.

No rush. No expectations.

Just an idea.

If it feels right, grab my hand and we’ll go on a new journey together.

There are so many beautiful and uncharted adventures that we could explore.

Love always and forever,

Big D

When you’re thinking about a new goal or dream, often the most difficult part is just getting started.⁣

Sometimes, it’s getting the motion started that can take the most effort.⁣

Once you're moving, you have the dynamic of momentum on your side, meaning it takes less force to keep going, even to go faster, than it does to start going.⁣

Whatever big thing you're facing right now, be it a dream, a goal, or a problem. Choose ONE thing to take care of yourself. One thing to put some energy and attention toward your desire.⁣

You only have to start with one thing, no matter how small, and then all of a sudden the magic of momentum will activate, and your next step will usually be easier than the previous one.⁣

And the step after that and the choice after that.⁣

The key is to focus on one thing at a time and let that momentum take you closer to your dream, your healing, yourself.⁣

What’s your one thing today?⁣
