As we, once again, are reading the 'best of' lists of 2025 - I'm a bit baffled by the 'best' in music. Which can only mean one thing.. the music is mainly terrible! đŸ˜…

But to kick things off with a bit of light - well, sort of light - I just watched "Train Dreams" , which I loved. Beautiful, sad, profound, perfect for this moment in history. And read "Stoneyard Devotional" by Charlotte Wood, which i was reminded to read due to a 'best' list. I loved the book - a meditation on regret, loss, forgiveness.. Ok it's not a light read, but contains many indelible images and conjures feelings and memories.

What did you love this year? How best to while away a few quiet days between Christmas and New Years?

(And I'm kidding, mostly, about the music.. )

Somehow, we can purchase tulips through the entire winter here in Toronto. It's a blessing to be sure - flowers brighten every moment. Even when they're in decline.

Monks are seated to be ordained by the Buddha during the Makha Bucha lunar festival at the Dhammakaya temple. The Dhammakaya movement, founded in Thailand in 1970, believes that meditation is a path to nirvana. It’s popular amongst middle class and elite Thais who donate generously. The enormous Dhammakaya temple, north of Bangkok, resembles a spaceship from the air. The Dhammakaya movement is famous for orchestrating these giant photo-worthy events involving hundreds of monks. It also faced controversy in Thailand in 2017, when the former abbott disappeared after a police raid, and was believed to have embezzled millions of dollars. Bucha

Many of the villages in Bangladesh are nestled in nature - with lush vegetation, streams and ponds, and shaded tracks leading from building to building. Here, kids walk home together after a routine immunization session in their village Young babies were vaccinated against several diseases including polio, measles, hepatitis B, diptheria and whooping cough , while young women were vaccinated against tetanus. Bangladesh’s high vaccination coverage of >95% has led to the end of polio, elimination of maternal-neonatal tetanus, and control of hepatitis B. Kaliakoir, Gazipur District, Bangladesh. Sometimes a face captivates - there’s an intensity, or curiosity, or stillness - or something imperceptible but ever-present, that keeps you looking, and wondering who the person is. This child - maybe not even a year old - has that kind of face. I spent some time in his community in Gazipur district, just north of Dhaka in Bangladesh, while documenting an immunisation clinic. This boy was one of many vaccinated within a couple of hours, by efficient health workers supported by dedicated mothers. When I look at this photo I can’t look away from this child, and smile to think about what he might become.

In Kunming on Sundays, hundreds of people gather at Green Lake Park to dance, sing, play music, walk and do tai chi. It’s a glorious burst of colour and fun in this charming park, which is called Cui Hu locally. People come in traditional clothing - there are many cultural groups living in Yunnan Province. On this day, from morning until sunset, they gathered and danced in a circle to the sound of this guitar, and music piped through loud speakers. I was invited to join in, and while the steps are fairly simple, I mixed up one in ten. Great fun despite my two left feet.

On every first and third Sunday in Kigali, Rwanda, the main streets close to cars and the city fills with people exercising. The athletic arena opens its doors and young people come to play sports. Here, teenage girls practice netball in advance of a game with another team. It’s always wonderful to see young women thrive in whatever area they love, and these girls clearly loved their sport.

The calm and beauty of 's coastline, in New South Wales, near Bermagui. This is what it should look like. Last week, people living in this region spent nights huddled on the beach, wondering if their homes, properties, animals and these beautiful forests would survive. The fire danger persists. *Edit - And as pointed out in the comments, power, food, and water supplies are also at risk - it's a terrible spiral. Fighting is about preserving our beautiful planet. How could we do otherwise?

Looking back through photos as I finally have my office set up again. Found this happy accident. A filter, misplaced - near the source of the Mekong River - known here as the Dza Chu - high on the Tibetan plateau of Qinghai, China. A mystical land where wolves and yak roam, and every mountain holds a name, a myth and a soul.

I miss Thailand. Here, the famous water buffalo races in Chonburi. The Thais adore their buffalos. When I talked to Thai people with a rural background about these massive animals, their fondness was profound. "Beautiful buffalo," one woman told me - evoking memories of childhood, of farm work, of family, of sitting together and reflecting on a big day. Here, brave riders race the buffalos ba****ck, in 34+ heat - an annual event that draws thousands from the region.
