In WWII, one did not want to be of fighting age in Newfoundland and be seen as not fighting for King and Country.

Alas, not all who volunteered to serve met the physical requirements and were turned down.

For them, there was this pin to let one and all know that one had volunteered, as was one's duty.

My grandfather was turned down. This was his pin. He served instead in the Merchant Navy in his and his brother's schooner.

Thank you to Indie88Toronto for the tix, which Jen won last fall. It was amazeballs finally seeing Green Day after 3 decades of listening to Dookie and the subsequent albums.

On the left is MT Northern Spirit at the Petro-Canada Lubricants Pier, and on the right is MV Algoma Sault at the Ash Grove Cement Pier.

The beach gets its red appearance from discarded fragments of red clay pipe from the old Hamilton and Toronto Sewer Pipe Company factory built in 1955 with the idea of operating a state of the art facility. The press release claimed that the new building would accommodate every new advance in pipe technology, manufacturing, and installation. For the next 25 years, the facility would produce various sizes of baked clay pipes. As with any manufacturing, there were often pieces that didn’t meet the company’s quality standards. McKeil Marine tugboat MV Vigilant I, and a flock of seagulls, at the Burlington Canal on 20 June 2024.

Vigilant I was outbound from Hamilton, ON to Goderich, ON which will take it from Lake Ontario, upbound through the Welland Canal, across Lake Erie, up the Detroit River, through Lake St. Clair, up the St. Clair River, and finally into Lake Huron.
