We’re proud to once again launch the Toronto Fire Fighters Toy Drive in partnership with Global News . Every year, our community comes together to help us bring hope, joy, and holiday cheer to children and families in need across Toronto.

With the support of Global News and the generosity of our neighbours, this long-standing tradition continues to make a real difference during the holiday season. And remember — it’s never too late to donate! New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at any Toronto Fire Services station across the city. Together, we can spread smiles—one toy at a time.

Residents from 11 Thorncliffe Park and 21 Overlea Blvd are still displaced as Toronto Fire battles what Chief Jim Jessop calls an “unprecedented and extremely challenging fire.”

The 5-alarm fire, which started last Thursday, is still burning nearly a week later. It’s trapped deep inside a 25–50 mm gap between the two buildings — a space so tight firefighters can’t reach it with standard hoses. Crews have had to break through walls and even use garden hoses to get water into the gap.

The material between the buildings burns slowly, making progress extremely difficult. Jessop says Toronto Fire has never encountered anything like this.

Due to high carbon monoxide levels and significant water and structural damage, both buildings remain evacuated. There is no timeline yet for when residents can return.

Nearly 400 displaced residents are currently staying in hotels, and officials urge those affected to contact their insurance providers for support.

Once the fire is fully extinguished, engineers will need to test for toxins, assess structural integrity, and confirm safety systems before anyone can go back in.

The relationship between a Fire Chief and his Fireground Incident Technician (FIT) is built on trust, communication, and mutual respect. It’s more than just a driver — the FIT is a confidant, an extra set of eyes and ears, and a critical link between command and the front line.

FITs support the chief both en route and on scene, helping manage logistics, size-ups, and radio traffic, all while maintaining discretion with sensitive information. Their unique perspective helps bridge the gap between frontline operations and command-level decisions.

It’s a behind-the-scenes partnership that keeps the fireground running smoothly — one built on experience, teamwork, and quiet leadership.

On Sunday, October 6, 2024, we gathered at the Ontario Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial to pay tribute to the brave souls who gave their lives in service to our communities. Designed by Siggy Puchta and unveiled in 2005, this powerful memorial stands as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of our firefighters, depicting a firefighter rescuing a child. With a red Maltese Cross-shaped plinth, it bears the names of those who fell on duty.

We came together on the northeast corner of Queen’s Park to remember and honour their bravery, heroism, and unwavering dedication. Their legacy lives on in the hearts of all who attended.
