Heavy smoke could be seen for kilometres as Toronto Fire Services battled a three-alarm fire at an industrial bakery Thursday afternoon.
The fire, which began in an oven, quickly extended into the roof, forcing firefighters to transition from an interior attack to aerial operations. Crews worked through intense heat, poor air quality, and challenging conditions to bring the fire under control.
Division Commander Robert Hewson highlighted the challenges crews faced, saying:
“The heat and the air quality is definitely challenging, the distances that we’re dragging hoses, and just the workloads. We do concentrate on watching our crews and cycling them, just to keep those work cycles lower and keep everybody healthy.”
