Waiting for a Sunrise

That day, on a bitterly cold winter night, I went to sleep with the sunrise in my eyes. In the dark before dawn, while quietly organizing my equipment without disturbing anyone, it felt as though preparations for a battle were underway.

After all, the mighty life-giving Sun is no ordinary presence. Meeting him was bound to be something special—especially when, at the very first moment of his appearance above the horizon, the camera shutters would begin capturing countless expressions of his light.

Anyway—when I reached the lake at Bluffer’s Park in minus 26 degrees Celsius, the lake was nothing but ice. In the faint light before sunrise, I noticed a photographer in the distance, standing beside a tripod in silent anticipation, and my camera instinctively captured an image of him. He was partially hidden among some bushes. Looking around more carefully, I saw several others had already arrived before me, fully prepared and simply waiting. I, too, carefully placed my tripod on the solid ice.

That day, a few of us had paid the deepest respect imaginable to a single moment.

Each moment carries its own language, emotion, and color. Light plays an immense role in this. The moments just before sunrise and the hours just after sunset create an almost otherworldly feeling—and that feeling changes with the seasons. All of these sensations are first experienced through the eyes. In other words, the images fall onto the screen of the mind through vision.

These images of such unique feelings are not easily captured by a camera in their true form or emotional depth. Light and shadow create such an artistic illusion that capturing it demands mastery over lenses, aperture, shutter speed, camera body, white balance, ISO—and a good tripod. Then, after waiting patiently and trying repeatedly, when a moment finally reveals itself in its true form, the hunter’s mind cries out, “Eureka!”

Once in Toronto, I visited a joint exhibition of Edward Burtynsky and Ansel Adams. As I stood before one of Ansel’s landscapes, I felt as though I had entered the photograph itself—I was transported to the very place where he had captured that image through immense dedication. Carrying those heavy cameras and tripods of his time, he would climb mountains before dawn and wait all day to capture that one perfect moment. On that day, he understood the intricate play of light and painted with it—and today that timeless image still hangs on a wall.

Just like nature, the depths of the human mind are filled with countless emotions, and their reflections appear in the eyes. Some of them spill across the face and throughout the body. And only a skilled hunter can capture those moments. They cannot be staged or captured through excessive lighting and artificial poses.

ছোট্ট মানুষটা রাইয়ান। ২০১৮-র এই তারিখে সিকর্ড জুনিয়র স্কুলের মাঠে।
প্রতিদিন সকাল সকাল তাকে স্কুলে নিয়ে যাবার কথা মনে পড়ে। বিশেষ করে শীতের সকাল।
পথের ধারের কিছু গাছ তার বন্ধুর মত প্রিয় ছিল। প্রতিদিনই সে অন্তত একটা হলেও গাছের ডাল কুড়িয়ে নিয়ে আসতো বাসায়। আর স্কুলে যাওয়ার পথে যদি কোন পছন্দের ঝরা ডাল পেয়ে যেত, তো আমার হাতে ধরিয়ে দিত বাসায় নিয়ে যেতে। তার হাতের ছোঁয়া লাগা এই কাঠগুলোর প্রতি কেমন একটা মায়া জন্মে যেত।

“টরন্টো” নামে ফটোগ্রাফির একটা বই করেছিলাম ২০১৪ শেষ থেকে ২০১৫-র ফেব্রুয়ারি পর্যন্ত শীতকে ঘিরে। সেই প্রচন্ড শীতে তোলা প্রতিটি মুহূর্তের সাথে আমার অদ্ভূত সব স্মৃতি জড়িয়ে আছে।
এটি সে এন টাওয়ারের উপর থেকে সূর্যাস্তের সময়ে তোলা—বরফে জমে থাকা টরন্টো শহরে সূর্যাস্ত।
