A few years ago I travelled to Ghana to join primatologists and photograph the critically endangered White-thighed Colobus.
It is an experience I took for granted, not realizing the
gravity of the situation. Every night I take images of the non-human beings I have seen along the way. How and where are they today? There are pictures that hang in my mind.

They fly, swim, AND dive to depth of 150 feet! The Double-crested Cormorants webbed feet can take them to great depths AND allow them to “walk on water” for takeoff. What’s not to love? We almost completely lost these birds in the 1960s and 70s due to the use of DDT. The return of the Double-crested Cormorant is an incredible conservation success story. Let’s celebrate the gifts we were given, and not fear them.

So many myths around these beautiful birds. They are not responsible for depleting fish stocks, they are not a threat to our forests, and they are a NATIVE species. They are not invasive.

From Cormorant mornings to Cormorant nights. Wing to wing, they settle in for the night. As the cull enters its second week I can’t help but wonder how many of these magnificent birds have made it out of Ontario. Sadly, it is the juveniles that are the last to leave and therefore the most vulnerable. It’s the young ones that are most likely to die. Not yet sure of their migration path, so young. Gods speed little ones.

New interview just posted! Doing my best to inspire the next generation of conservationists. What a wonderful group! Over 150 members from around the world, ages 6-19. I love what I do and the people I meet.

A face in the crowd. I never forget that every living being is an individual. Whether a bird, an elephant, a pig or a dog, we all have individual personalities. I love my mornings with the Cormorants. Arriving before sunrise, watching the sun come up as their heads rise with those beautiful emerald eyes glowing. Never had a better place to have a cuppa coffee than right here in my own backyard. The use of DDT in the 1960s and 70s almost wiped them out in Ontario . Due to incredible conservation efforts they are a success story comeback. What a precious gift right, here in my own backyard..

Every once in a while, it’s nice to see yourself in the field. Some years ago, after a chance visit to a wildlife rescue, I felt a calling to advocate for conservation; a passion rekindled from my childhood. There I learned that every animal in rescue is the result of human interference. As habitats continue to dwindle, and wildlife struggles to survive, I want my work to shine a light on species caught in the crosshairs. I am determined to speak for the most vulnerable and give agency to the causes that drive me.

As creators and photographers, we have a critical role to play. We are witnesses, horn-blowers, advocates, fundraisers, and storytellers. By creating meaningful images, we move, educate, and inspire others into action. It is my joy and purpose to show people how powerful they are.”

While many are looking up, I am looking down. I love the birds that are foraging on the ground;
Robins, fox sparrows, wrens… But this was a surprise. A beautiful juvenile Red-tailed Hawk in the creek below. Lovely.

It’s fun to see where life can take you. My love for wildlife and conservation has meant I meet quite a few great people along the way. This Saturday I have been invited to speak to the Junior Giraffe Club. How fun is that! The junior giraffe club is for youth age 7 to 17 years old from around the world, who are passionate about giraffes. The goal of the club is to create a worldwide community of draft youth ambassadors. I’m excited about this one. Anytime I can talk about my love for the wild world, and share it along the way, gives me great faith in the next generation. Hey, give me a soapbox and I’ll get on it.
