“Flying Red”. Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). Scarborough, Ontario. May 2, 2025.

In Native American cultures, cardinals are seen as messengers from the spirit world. They are believed to bring guidance, protection and comfort to those in need, especially during times of grief and loss. (Source: milanomonuments.com).

Endangered species 😔.

Piping plover (Charadrius melodus). June 2024.

A 2011 survey found just over 450 breeding pairs in Canada. The biggest threat to piping plovers throughout their range is the loss or degradation of habitat resulting from the recreational use of beaches. ATVs, off-leash dogs, or even innocent beachcombers out for a walk often destroy plover nests or prompt the parents to abandon otherwise healthy eggs. In addition, garbage left behind attracts predators such as the red fox, raccoon, ring-billed gull and crow. (Source: wildlifepreservation.ca).

Endangered species 😔.

Piping plover (Charadrius melodus). June 2024.

Little round Piping Plovers hide in plain sight on sandy ocean and lake shores, blending right in with their sandy gray backs. It's not until they scurry down the sand on their orange legs that you're likely to spot these big-eyed shorebirds with a sharp black collar and an orange bill. They nest in soft sand away from the water's edge along the Atlantic Coast, Great Plains, and Great Lakes. They are endangered due to habitat loss, disturbance, and predation. “The Next Generation”. Piping plover (Charadrius melodus) baby. June 2024.

(Status: endangered & threatened). 😔

Hatching and raising a family on the beach isn’t easy, even for well-camouflaged birds with feathers that blend into the landscape. Piping Plovers depend on dynamic, healthy coastal ecosystems. Key challenges to the recovery of this small shorebird include habitat loss from coastal development, disturbances from recreation and motorized vehicles, predator pressures, and climate change. “The Next Generation”. Red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) fledgling.. Markham, Ontario, Canada. July 2024.

She incubates the eggs for 11-12 days. After the babies hatch, they stay in the nest for about 10 days. Babies leave the nest and climb on cattails before they can fly.

“Out of the Blue”. Indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea). York Region, Ontario, Canada. June 2024.

The male indigo bunting is the only solid blue bird in the eastern United States, but it’s all an illusion — literally a trick of the light. The indigo bunting’s feathers are not really blue; the male’s brilliant azure plumage is caused by the process of diffraction of light around the structure of the bird’s feathers. This process scatters all but the blue light, and the resulting color shifts from black to blue to turquoise as the angle of reflected light changes. (Source: heraldandtribune.com).

“Mr. Bluey”. Indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea). York Region, Ontario, Canada. June 2024.

Male Indigo Buntings are persistent singers. Even on the hottest summer days, they can be spotted warbling their sweet, double-noted song from treetops, telephone wires, and other elevated perches. Their sharp "s**k" call note is often heard and easy to recognize. (Source: abcbirds.org).

They also have slender bodies and long wings that are bent at the "wrist." Their strong wings give them extra lift to fly up and out of the water with a heavy fish. Once they catch a fish, they consume it using a black bill with a sharp hook. (Source: nwf.org).

American minks (Neovison vison). Greater Toronto Area. July 2024.

Minks aren't large animals, but they can be quite ferocious when necessary and are even capable of killing animals much larger than themselves. They generally kill their prey by biting it in the neck. (Source: reconnectwithnature.org).

Female rose-breasted grosbeak (Pheucticus ludovicianus). York Region, Ontario, Canada. June 2024.

Wherever it roams, the Rose-breasted Grosbeak seeks the shelter and bounty of leafy tree canopies. It is rarely seen low down, unless visiting a bird bath, stream, or, on occasion, a bird feeder. Typically, the grosbeak remains hidden in the foliage, only grudgingly coming into plain view for birders. (Source: abcbirds.org).

Great blue heron (Ardea herodias). York Region, Ontario, Canada. July 2024.

Great Blue Herons can hunt day and night thanks to a high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes that improve their night vision. (Source: allaboutbirds.org).

Ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. July 2024.

Although Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are well recognized as nectar feeders, they also eat spiders and tiny insects such as flies, gnats and aphids as a source of fat and protein. These foods help hummingbirds to nearly double their weight (from about 3.25 grams to 6 grams) before crossing the Gulf of Mexico. (Source: fs.usda.gov).
