Okay, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have some BIG camera updates 👀📱

📸 Variable aperture — finally! You can now adjust the aperture on the main camera, giving you more control over depth of field and how much light hits the sensor.

🎥 More manual camera controls — Apple is giving us more control over how we actually shoot, which is a BIG deal for anyone who loves photography or video. Obsessed with manual control of white balance and shutter speed!

✨ New camera features — plus some seriously exciting upgrades to the overall camera system that make the Pro models even more compelling for creators. I love that Texture and Grain are now part of Photographic Styles.

And honestly… variable aperture is the one I’m most excited to actually play with. 👀

Would you upgrade for the camera alone?

Apple just announced A LOT 👀 Here’s your Apple Event recap in 60 seconds or less:

📱 iPhone 18 Pro — VARIABLE APERTURE! This is huge! Other new manual camera features, including the updates I’m most excited about for actually taking photos and video.
📱 iPhone Duo — Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Two 48MP cameras. Really cool technology!

⌚️ Apple Watch Series 12 — a new Readiness score, more frequent heart-rate + HRV tracking, Daytime Vitals and new health insights.

🎧 AirPods — some pretty fun new updates that make them even more useful beyond just listening to music.

📸 Camera updates — Apple is continuing to push the iPhone camera further, with some updates that photographers and video people are definitely going to notice.

✨ And a few other surprises — all packed into one very busy Apple Event.

Basically, if you missed the keynote, I’ve got you. 😂 Save this for later + send it to your friend who will inevitably ask, “Okay but… what did Apple actually announce?”

I had the opportunity to attend a private media tour of the Canadian Opera Company as part of their annual Open House. It was absolutely incredible. We were given access to areas that are otherwise closed to the public, and learned things about the company that blew my mind, and only deepened my respect for them. What a beautiful opportunity.

Let’s keep the arts alive, together! Did you know the Canadian Opera Company has tickets as low as $45, or $28 if you’re under 30 (but your guest doesn’t have to be!). And there’s even standing room tickets for $15. And my fave: wear what you feel comfortable in - there’s no requirement to be fancy!

I had the best time and can’t wait for the new season to start! Thanks for having me Blue Door.

Should you get the iPhone 17 Pro… or wait for the iPhone 18? 👀

This is probably one of the questions I get asked most, so I’ve been down the iPhone 18 rumour rabbit hole and here are the upgrades I’m watching most closely:

📸 Variable aperture camera — potentially the biggest one for me as a photographer. The main camera could actually adjust how much light enters the lens, giving us more control over exposure and potentially better low-light performance.

🏝️ Smaller Dynamic Island — some Face ID technology could move underneath the display, meaning a little more screen and a less… island-y Island.

🔋 Bigger battery — especially on the Pro Max, which would be VERY welcome for anyone who spends their day taking photos, shooting video and generally living on their phone.

📱 Foldable iPhone — yep. Apple may finally be entering its foldable era, although this one could come with a pretty wild price tag.

Of course, these are all rumours until Apple officially announces anything.

But that variable aperture is 👀 the one I’m watching VERY closely!!

What are your thoughts on the rumours? You can stream it all on September 9th at 1:00pm ET!

A magical 48 hours in San Francisco ✨

It will never be lost on me that I can be downtown, do a small hike (with a coyote!), dip my toes in the ocean, and see the iconic Painted Ladies all in the same day. Thanks to Adobe for having me out.

✨PINCH ME! I spoke at the Adobe VIP Creator Summit✨

Could not be more grateful to Pei Ketron and the community team for giving me an opportunity to share my story. WHAT A COOL WEEK! ❤️

Beyond grateful to everyone I met this week. This is just the beginning, everyone!

📍 SAN FRANCISCO, I’m here!
I can’t believe I’m here for an Adobe VIP Community Summit. This feels like such a pinch me moment. I have so much more to share but I’ll save that for when I have more than an hour of sleep. 🤭 What a dream come true!

I made this video on my iPhone using Adobe Video Premiere Mobile while waiting for my table at plow. That feels pretty cool!

Last night was everything I could have hoped for and more. 🥹

We celebrated World Photography Day the best way I know how: a photo tip and Adobe Lightroom workshop, chocolate chip cookies (and snacks!), and a sunset photo walk through Toronto.

It’s not lost on me that time is such a valuable currency, and choosing to spend a Toronto summer evening with me is not something I take lightly.

Some thank yous:

Adobe Lightroom and for believing in me and collaborating with me on this incredible event.

lucasyoung for the incredible designs, the all-nighters, the planning, and all the support that happens behind the scenes.

Anomaly for generously letting us use your beautiful, perfect space.

To the friends who came out to support me or sent texts, to the people who keep coming back for more walks, and to those who took a chance on me and came to their very first photo walk with me: thank you.

I often feel like people come to learn a few photo tips, but leave with (hopefully) so much more.

The pride that comes from trying something new. The joy of noticing the light or seeing something differently. The community. The empowerment. And that feeling of belonging — of showing up somewhere and realizing you’re surrounded by people who see the world a little bit like you do.

That’s always been the best part of these walks for me.
Photography gets us out the door, but the connection is what keeps us coming back. 📸❤️

These are shot on iPhone 17 Pro Max or my FUJIFILM X/GFX CANADA X-T5.

Sometimes the most ordinary things make for really fun photos. 📸

For this one, I’m using Lightroom’s Masking tool to isolate the subject so I can make edits without changing everything around it.

Lightroom can automatically identify the subject for you, which makes it really easy to brighten it up, add a little contrast, or play with the colours — all without affecting the rest of the photo.

Try it with something you’d normally walk right past and see what you can do with it.
