Riverview Winter Carnival 2026 at Mill Creek Nature Park was another smashing success! This compass design is 54 meters wide and truly oriented north to south, east to west. I wonder if any planes overhead noticed this aspect.

The conditions today for our 5th year were some of the best I've seen. -14C in the morning and -9 in the afternoon. 12 inches of ice covered in 6-7 inches of snow and the thinnest layer of ice crystals on top to keep the shape crisp. Sunny 100% of the time with minimal wind.

Sheldon had to sit this one out due to a injured foot, but he played a big part in the design. We've since dubbed this design "The Sheldon". You better be all healed up for the next one dude!

Big shout out to Allan Kruise who was able to lend some stomps to the effort in Sheldon's absence. Hope you're not too sore in the morning! 😆

Already looking forward to the next one!

PS - The double cheeseburger we had delivered from The Homestead Restaurant in Riverview was superb! Really hits the spot after a great effort snowshoeing.

Today was yet another cold one laying down tracks in Mill Creek Nature Park, beginning the day at -29C with windchill. The Town of Riverview invited Sheldon Benoit and myself back for a 4th year, this time to celebrate the 50th year of their Winter Carnival!

The snowflake design is a symbol that the Riverview Winter Carnival uses as their logo and was secretly decided upon during our last visit in February, 2024.

Each of the trunks are 25 meters long, with a 2 meter extension. The branches are 8m, 10m, 12m, and 4m in length. With the included surrounding circle, at a diameter of 70m, this design marks the biggest one we've created for the winter carnival to date.

Stay tuned for a pretty epic video!

PS - Shoutout to Homestead Restaurant who is always our choice when asked what we want for lunch on the ice!

This session was during the ideal fall colours of the season and we lucked out with some overcast skies ☁️👌 Chef's kiss of a combo and how about those outfit choices!

Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS.

The close up image was collected Thursday evening (Oct 17th) at approximately 7:45pm. This was taken with my Nikon D850 paired with the Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens. At this zoom, you cannot expose the image for very long because you begin to see star trails in the image. I found that 2.5 seconds was too long, so these had to be taken at only 1 second exposures. Luckily noise reduction helped dampen the grain caused by the required higher ISO of 2500.

I was able to view the comet at that time with the naked eye.

The last image is from tonight; October 19th, 2024, taken with my cell phone, Pixel 6 Pro, in my front yard. Tonight, I was not able to see the comet with the naked eye. This could have been because I was trying to view it a lot closer to the town of Truro (Light pollution is not your friend when viewing night sky objects).

Comet A3 is slowly dimming and departing our local sky and will be visible with telescopes and binoculars for the rest of the month, possibly into the beginning of November.

This timelapse is from 2:00-2:30am on October 11th, I was on my way home from my Wentworth Aurora outing and spotted this scene. I obviously had to stop for this one!
