"I wanted a change in careers. I was a cook at Five Corners for years and at the Superstore for eleven years. I just saw that I had potential. That I could do more." Amanda Langthorne has made a few significant changes all right, she is the owner of Parkview styles on Main Street. She and her husband, Ian, have been renovating and upgrading the hair salon over the past year, with striking results. "The windows overlook Frost Park, which is where we got the name. It's a beautiful spot."
Amanda shared that she has a learning disability, so was a little nervous about going back to school as an adult. "When I started at NSCC, I didn't know I'd get so much help! That was a nice surprise. They gave me tools for success, hired a tutor, really showed me they were invested in my success. My disability didn't stop me at all. I had to work hard, and I showed everyone, including myself and my kids and my husband that I could do it!"
Amanda is sure of herself, and has been given some esteem-boosting support in her time at school and since she bought this business."I was part of the Abilympics Team and went to competition in Bordeaux, France." Abilympics, I learned, does for skills competitions what Paralympics does for athletes, and is the World's Largest Skills Competition for Persons with Disabilities. "It was the first time Hairdressing was part of the competition and I won silver!" (Link to results for this past year's Abilympics: http://abilympics.events/en/the-results-of-the-9th-abilympics/)
"It was an experience I will never forget."
Now that she and Ian have this business in a beautiful location near the heart of downtown Yarmouth, they wanted to make everything look as good as possible so availed themselves of the town's Facade Program. "We couldn't pass up on the opportunity for the town to give us up to 5K to put an amazing face on our business." The impact of that investment has been real. "A lot of people come in saying the whole town looks so much more urban. One customer said we would fit right in with New York shops."
They are very proud of the work that has been done, and where life is going. Who could blame anyone for rooting for Amanda to enjoy great success.
