The Painted Desert Inn is one of my favorite national park buildings. After construction in 1924 it evolved from a Route 66 way-stop and inn to almost being torn down at least twice, and now it operates as a museum and bookstore. It's location on the edge of a cliff in the center of the large expanse of the painted desert, the pueblo style it has evolved into, and the style that so fits its location make it a beautiful example of how buildings can fit into their environment. There are several photos here, including the interior, some stained glass skylights, and a closer look at the building and the its view of the painted desert.
