Journey to 2023 Honolulu Marathon … Race Day … December 10,2023 … a Long Delayed Race Report

Race Day finally arrived! Even though I went to bed early the night before the race my 2:15 am wake up alarm still felt too early! But I did get up, have an energy bar and coffee for breakfast, get dressed and at 3:13 am started walking over to the Start Line area. The walk over was around 1.6 miles and took about 30 minutes … legs and body felt ok at this point but still early....

Goals for 2026

Goals for 2026 My goals for 2026 are still evolving but at this point in time they are as follows: Return to consistent running and exercise with the overall goal being a return to the Honolulu Marathon in December. Continue to improve my diet and nutrition. Hopefully the first two goals also mean avoid having to see any more doctors for the rest of the year! Take and share more photographs and videos. Write more. Read more.

Time to Return to Writing

Hartland, New Brunswick Covered Bridge … June 2025 I may have seemed to have almost “abandoned” my blog after December 2023 but in reality other life pressures intervened. But in 2026 I want to “catch up” for the last 2 years plus be consistently writing this year. During the last 2 years I have done a number of driving trips … both short to Penticton, BC and much longer to the Canadian Maritime Provinces & US New England States....

The day before the Honolulu Marathon there is the Kalakaua Merrie Mile which is on part of the marathon course … starts in waves and is more of a fun run than pure race … other than the elite race which follows the wave starts. I ran the Merrie Mile two years ago but it was a much smaller race at that time … virtually no Japanese runners due to covid restrictions … this year’s race had close to 3,000 entrants and almost 2,300 finishers … unfortunately some participants either didn’t listen to race instruction or didn’t care and started in earlier waves … too many people already walking before 1/4 mile which it difficult to get into a racing rhythm....

In 5 days and a few hours this years Honolulu Marathon will be over … a few notes looking ahead. The course map is shown above and the course elevations are shown below … the significant hills are between miles 7 to 10 and miles 23.5 to 25 … depending on how you are feeling on race day the hills either fly by with no issues or feel like Mt Everest....

During November I continued steady training … ran every other day for the first part of the month before having a short break due to getting ready for, and traveling to, Honolulu on November 16th. In November I ran 11 times for a total of 107.25 miles … down from October but still had 4 runs 10 miles or over which matched what I ran in October… my longest run was 14 miles just before I flew to Honolulu… I also had 10, 11and 12 mile runs....

During October I had very steady training … only “bump” was a fall on a trail which fortunately did no structural damage but my lower right leg was badly scraped … still managed to run 6.5 miles that day. In October I ran 14 times for a total of 133.5 miles … my highest monthly mileage since December 2014… my longest run was 14 miles … I also had 10, 13.25 and 13.5 mile runs....

During September my training was interrupted a bit by two short trips plus some other life stuff … a while not increasing my monthly mileage I did maintain my fitness. In August I ran 12 times for a total of 98 miles … a decrease from the 111 miles in August … my longest run was 12 miles … I also had an 11 mile run....
