Residents in East Vancouver clap and make noise from their balconies on Mar. 31, 2020. Every night at 7 p.m., residents erupt in cheers and applause to salute the city's health care and essential service workers. The displays of appreciation take place at a time when some health care workers are switching shifts, and are meant as a thank-you for those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. A former psychiatric nurse, Janice Bannister has worked as a stand-up comedian and taught comedy classes and made presentations about healthy living for two decades. Bannister shares some ideas on how people can stay positive during the COVID-19 crisis. Staying connected, being creative and avoiding around-the-clock news coverage are among her suggestions for folks who are spending lots of time at home. (Jennifer Gauthier/for the Record)

On this day in 2018, thousands of people gathered to march in a First Nations-led protest against Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Members of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam and Squamish First Nations organized the event, which led to a "watch house" being constructed by the Indigenous groups to observe the Trans Mountain Expansion. “Kwekwecnewtxw” or “a place to watch from” in the henqeminem language, were traditionally built by Coast Salish peoples to watch for enemies.
