Why are autumn leaves orange?

As the length of the day shortens and the temperature drops it is harder for plants to produce food in their leaves. Chlorophyll, the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis, breaks down making the red and orange pigments, carotene and xanthophyll,visible for the human eyes to see.
