Staying low in a field of firew**d paid off in gold with this Great Gray Owl. Crouching beneath the tall fire w**d kept the profile subtle, letting the soft pinks and purples melt into a washed-out, dreamlike foreground.

Threading a shot through dense foliage like that usually sends an autofocus system hunting from stalk to stalk. Switching over to manual focus was the only way to bypass the tangled stems, lock directly onto those pierce-yellow eyes, and keep the gaze razor-sharp.

Taming a massive 600mm lens hand-held is no joke, but cranking the shutter to 1/2500 allowed shooting wide open at f/4 to completely freeze any micro-tremors, dropping the background into a deep, velvety blur while leaving every intricate facial plume perfectly defined.

Before they ever take their first successful strike, Great Gray owlets spend hours engaging in a clumsy, mesmerizing ritual: learning how to map the world below them.

Once they leave the nest or tree cavity—often before they can even fly properly—they become "branchers," hopping along limbs and scanning the forest floor. Because an owl’s large, tubular eyes are completely fixed in their sockets, they cannot look sideways or down by simply moving their eyeballs. Every change in perspective requires moving the entire head.

A Whisper in the Woods 🌲🦉

Nature has a way of stripping away everything else and leaving you with just the raw, quiet truth of a moment. In this photo, a tender exchange unfolds between an adult Great Gray Owl and its owlet.

Look closely at the contrast the soft, downy feathers of the curious owlet against the beautifully defined, weathered wisdom of the parent. It’s a powerful reminder that behind the fierce reputation of these apex predators lies a deep, protective tenderness.

Moments like this are why I spend hours here. Nature never ceases to amaze.

Help me decide! 🤔🦉

Two different crops of the same incredible encounter with a Great Gray Owl.
one on the right keeps the full environment, using the trees to frame the shot and give it depth.

the other zooms right in on the incredible details and that intense stare.

Personally, I’m a fan of the wider composition on right because it puts you right there in the woods with the bird.

Composition check: Tight crop vs. Environmental framing? 🤔

Same bird, a common yellow throat same perch, but two completely different vibes based on where I placed the focal points. Image 1 brings you right into the bird's space, while Image 2 uses the vertical lines and the spiderweb to anchor the shot.

Which composition do you like the most, and why? Drop a 1 or 2 below!

Watch this Great Gray Owl lock its eyes on a target and dive from about 6 feet up to snag a vole. Their hearing is so razor-sharp they can pinpoint a rustle beneath the surface, and once they commit to the drop, it’s game over.
