FROM STREET TO PRINT | THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSIGNMENT | A Vancouver Photography Walk

This Sunday, we take The Photographic Assignment to Commercial Drive.

Three hours walking and photographing together, with a little direction. Choose a personal photographic assignment, or simply come along for the walk. The assignments are there to shift your attention, give you something specific to look for, and perhaps help you notice a photograph you might otherwise pass by.

After the walk, select one photograph. I’ll turn it into a finished archival fine art print, presented at our Print Reveal on September 20.

The Photographic Process: Fred Herzog

Study the city Fred Herzog photographed. Then make your own work through colour, observation, critique, editing, print and exhibition.

Over five weeks, we will explore Herzog’s photographic philosophy, his use of colour, and the poetry he found in everyday Vancouver. More importantly, you will put those ideas into practice through guided photowalks, assignments, critiques, individual mentorship, editing, sequencing and printmaking.

The workshop follows the photograph from the moment it is made through to the finished piece: working proofs, final selection, archival printing, signing, custom framing and a public showcase.

Each participant leaves with a developed body of work and a professionally printed archival exhibition photograph, custom presented in a 16 × 20 gallery frame.

EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION — EXTENDED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 6

Registration for The Photographic Process: Fred Herzog is now more than half full, and the final spots remain.

Register by September 6 and receive two special additions valued at more than $150:

• A copy of Fred Herzog’s Modern Color, the final major book published during his lifetime
• A hand signed photograph of Fred Herzog during one of his final days photographing the streets of Vancouver, from the personal archive of Andrew Legere

Over five weeks, we will study Fred Herzog, colour photography, and the complete fine art process from capture through critique, editing, sequencing, proof printing, final printing, signing, custom framing, and a public showcase.

The workshop includes three guided photowalks through neighbourhoods Fred photographed, two assignments, two group critiques, individual mentorship, portfolio editing and sequencing, a Fred Herzog inspired slide night, archival working prints, a final exhibition print presented in a 16 × 20 gallery frame, and more.

The Photographic Assignment returns to Granville Island for an early morning walk through one of Vancouver’s most visually layered neighbourhoods.

At the beginning of the walk, every photographer receives a unique personal assignment designed to give you direction without telling you exactly what to photograph. You choose from four levels, ranging from easy to journalist, depending on how much you want to challenge yourself. An easier assignment might send you looking for a particular colour, shape, pattern or relationship within the frame. A more challenging assignment might ask you to approach and photograph people, follow a situation as it unfolds, or tell the story of the morning through a small series of photographs.

No two assignments are alike, and none of them are rules. They are simply a way to shift your attention, give you something to search for, and help you notice photographs you may otherwise have walked past.

We’ll begin at 7:30 AM, photographing Granville Island during the early morning golden hour, as the city wakes up and the morning light begins to spill through the streets, the market, the industrial architecture and the waterfront.

What began as a photowalk during the 2026 Capture Photography Festival has grown into more than 200 photographers joining me on guided walks throughout Vancouver, across different neighbourhoods, different light, different weather and different times of day.

At its heart, it is simply a reason to get out with a group of people who love photography, walk with intention, make photographs, and perhaps see the familiar a little differently.

Another workshop begins.

A study of the moment colour photography entered the world of fine art and changed it forever.

The world was not quite ready for William Eggleston. Then came William Eggleston’s Guide.

The photographs broke rules, challenged what a serious photograph could be, and introduced the art world to the extraordinary colour and depth of his dye transfer prints.

Unmistakably Eggleston. Ordinary subjects, extraordinary colour.

Photographs that seem to age like wine. The more you learn about photography, colour, composition, and the history of the medium, the better they become.

Thank you to everyone who joined us over the past week, learning directly from the master himself.

We spent our time looking at photographs, talking about the photographic process, walking the streets of Vancouver, making new work, and finally coming back together tonight to edit, critique, and select photographs.

It was a real pleasure to host this workshop and to share the experience with such a great group of photographers.

Thank you, Richard, for your generosity, your stories, your knowledge, and for sharing more than five decades of photography with us.
