John Morrison Photographer

John Morrison Photographer Advertising photographer and art director .....Also doing photo workshops locally. My workshops are centered around the spirituality of photography.

I've been a photographer for over 35 years shooting advertising and fashion, music, entertainment, you name it I've shot it; swimsuits to car campaigns. My career spans the late 70's, 80's, 90's and here we are ....still shooting and keeping it edgy and cool. These days I do photography workshops for aspiring photographers as well as makeup artists, models and anyone interested in getting into thi

s exciting rewarding industry be it film or print. As an environmentalist I encourage students to be grounded to the earth rather than technology. I consider imagination to be as important if not more important than the camera you use. My passion now is shooting hair and music ...The way I approach a shoot is from a one on one platform....no board meetings or fences around creative. I'm doing big projects within the rock / metal genre incorporating video and drones but keeping it organic in terms of approach and editing. I enjoy creating and developing a brand and that can be a product, hotel, or an artist. Working with smaller creative teams is more fun that the advertising agency machine. I especially enjoy working with and developing imagery for musicians. Over the years I've won many awards for art direction, annual reports and fashion photography. My fashion photography has been primarily location work although I am as comfortable in studio or in any unfamiliar situation. I believe in getting oneself out of that comfort zone which for me breathes creativity. Each project is an opportunity to push the creative envelope and explore ideas everyone on a shoot brings forth .....hair, makeup, styling, modelling.....

When an expression on someone's face exudes more than words will ever do....A portrait of a young couple expecting . I shot this by a window. Window light is beautifully simplistic and ideal for images like this. The " organic" quality of natural light was my immediate thought when this picture was to be made.

The client was Supre Tanning with a product called VIBE . We did this shoot in Phoenix . I recall the intense heat which contributed to the " vibe" we were in making hot edgy pictures. My preference on doing projects like this is to get all the ducks in a row then do it fast and keep that energetic hype up there.

Anyone who knows me, knows my feelings about Artificial Intelligence which by definition alone, ought to say it all.
A Toronto magazine ( York Mag ) if memory serves me well gave me this shoot to do when I was starting out there. It was for a retirement story I believe. I got to the apartment where this couple I was to photograph lived . The moment I walked in with my lighting and cameras, the elderly man came at me with his large ( I recall ), strong hand grip and nearly shook my arm out of the socket. He was exuberant saying how great it was to see me again as it had been far too long since " we " worked together . His wife nattered at him to leave the poor man alone and let him do his job. I'd never met him in my life ! At least not in this one. I of course just went with it and shared his excitement to see him again as well. It's these kind of things that made being a photographer so much fun amidst the pressure and challenges. Behind every picture there is a story . You don't get that with this thing called AI.

I came across this picture I took at least 25 years ago of my dear friend and her two boys. I find it interesting looking back at the huge complex commercial shoots with large crews and alarming amounts of monies going down, a photo such as this one is simply a moment observed through a Pentax film camera loaded with Tri X film in a bathroom and it is just a " real " moment a Mom and her sons are enjoying. Here's how you brush your teeth boys ! LOL....The simplest , often not even recognized times in our lives are often the most magical I have found.

I'm often asked to photograph original art for artists seeking to not only have a digital record of their work, but so they can make limited edition prints or cards. It involves getting the right lighting and color balance to properly represent the vibrancy or subtle tonal values in the art. These two pieces were fun to photograph as the paint texture was so strong which meant a crisper lighting approach. Both are big pieces of art~

This was from a huge shoot in Toronto for " Bent Bikes ." The casting was up to me which was a great blessing because often models a client chooses don't work for the way my vision works. I approach still shoots as if they were a movie. I like to get a script, create a story and then just let the models or actors just play within that . It always worked LOL...This way the element of unexpected can manifest and the cameras keep rolling . Brent and Angie were awesome in this scenario . My direction was ....each be so consumed with themselves, there was no connection between them. A few times I had to crack up laughing while continually shooting.

I shot this picture a long time ago and it still is one I always loved. Pictures are much more than just pictures. What never ceases to intrigue me is that regardless of the millions of photos I have taken over the years, I recall the moment when the image was made.....the day, the sun, the emotion. We used to take our cat canoeing in the Muskokas. This little Island was maybe 200 feet in circumference . The cats's name was Binky . Thus " Bink Island " became a place visited often and she could be free to roam . Encircled by water , she wasn't going to run off . Pets and people fade from our lives, but the magic of moments lived, I believe is a precious gift often overlooked these days in the " hurry " to get on with it . I encourage anyone with an interest in photography to pursue it . It's a faithful friend and am ideal vehicle to get one engaged with life.
If the picture is worth a thousand words, what then must the moment be worth ?

Anyone who enjoys photography or simply being out in nature, must venture out on the many trails Kal Lake Park has to offer. I run these trails with my dog Benji and sit overlooking the lake, taking in the beauty around every turn. Early morning or late afternoon when the light softens is best for picture taking. This past Sunday we only saw one couple ....lots of deer, marmots. I have never seen a rattler yet .
