This cormorant was chilling out on a pole in Esquimalt Lagoon on the Hatley Castle Side. I didn't realize how turquoise their eyes are. Their eyes enable them to effectively hunt their prey under water. They're also incredible swimmers.

This gull was desperately trying to break this clam open for about ten minutes before I took this shot. It kept flying straight up and dropping it from about 20 feet in the air onto the beach. It wasn't having much luck. I have several more photos to edit of the gull in mid air releasing the clam.

This is a bar-tailed godwit. It is a rare sighting on Vancouver Island, but a bunch of them stopped here to feed before their non-stop flight to New Zealand. I took this photo down at Whiffin spit. It was dusk and pretty foggy, so the image turned out a bit noisy.

The bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica) is a large and strongly migratory wader in the family Scolopacidae, which feeds on bristle-worms and shellfish on coastal mudflats and estuaries. It has distinctive red breeding plumage, long legs, and a long upturned bill. Bar-tailed godwits breed on Arctic coasts and tundra from Scandinavia to Alaska, and overwinter on coasts in temperate and tropical regions of Australia and New Zealand. The migration of the subspecies Limosa lapponica baueri across the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to New Zealand is the longest known non-stop flight of any bird, and also the longest journey without pausing to feed by any animal. The round-trip migration for this subspecies is over 29,000 km (18,020 mi).

This is a little video I made today after my walk down at Whiffin Spit in Sooke BC, Canada. After using my telephoto lens to record video for the first time, I now have much more appreciation for the skill involved in producing content like this. The professionals that do this for a living are amazing at it. They also have gear worth tens of thousands of dollars. This is just my hobby.🤣

First of all, I apologize for the spots on the video. I didn't realize my lens was so dirty! I'm also sorry for the shakiness. I recorded all of this without a tripod. For some shots I did utilize the park benches for stabilization. I'm going to make more videos like this in the future, so hopefully I get better at it.

I also created the background music using "Bandlab". That's me playing the acoustic
guitar.😀

Fishing Great Blue Heron at Whiffin Spit in Sooke BC, Canada. There are always many to take photos of down there in the morning. It's a great place to see a variety of BC wildlife up close, including harbour seals & occasionally orcas. A lot of people go for a jog down there or walk their dogs. It is a 2.4 km walk from start to finish.
