This BC Aeolid isn’t extraordinary in and of itself. I have seen many before. The extraordinary thing for me was finding one in Seattle in a spot I had never seen them before. After spotting this first one, my friend from found two more, even smaller ones, chilling in a clamshell. Have they always been here and I wasn’t looking close enough? 2026 is definitely my year of even slower, closer looking!

So many jellies off the docks and at the shoreline! I don’t remember ever seeing so many large Aequoria victoria, the crystal jelly. You can easily recognize them by the radiating lines on their bell, like the spokes of a bicycle tire. There have also been some big moon jellies drifting about. Pure Salish Sea magic ✨✨

Squat lobster! We were out nightlighting last night and saw many of these crazy looking crustaceans drifting through the water. Their exceptionally long arms are the tell that you are looking at one!

Even though they are called a lobster, these friends are more closely related to hermit crabs. They live their lives deeper on the rocky sea floor, foraging for detritus, carrion and other crustaceans. They can use those long arms to stick out of a hiding spot to get snacks. Unlike other species of Squat Lobsters, our locals begin their lives swimming plankton before they settle into their bottom dwelling adulthood.

What an absolute treat and delight to see some under the full moon last night!

Some fishy finds from low tides last week! My favorite was the Scalyhead Sculpin-he was sooo pretty! Only the males sport that fancy head fringe.

Cockerell’s Dorid nudibranchs made their presence known during the low tides this past week! Look closely in the last video to see their eggs- a flat, pinkish spiral right above where the nudibranchs are hanging out.
