I know for all of us, the world as we know it, has been flipped upside down. But as I turn one year older today, I can’t help but feel grateful that I get the opportunity to celebrate another lap around the sun in one of my favourite places in the whole wide world- home.
Originally I had planned to spend the week with my friends , searching for surf and hiking to remote regions of Northern Vancouver Island. Due to the importance of social distancing and doing our part in keeping ourselves and our communities safe, we have undoubtedly decided to cancel the trip. It is important to stay close to home and not to travel through remote communitites at this time, limiting contact with others as much as possible. So I will be taking this as an opportunity to explore my own backyard (literally-stay tuned for my backyard birthday campout) and recognize now more than ever, what a privilege it is to have a home hideout, tucked away in the woods with safe access to the outdoors. I understand not everyone has the same opportunities and I can only imagine how hard these times can be be! There is a lot of anxiety in the air lately, so if you're able to get some fresh air safely, I highly recommend you do so keeping in mind the following:
-Avoid popular parks and beaches.
-refrain from activities that could put you at risk for injury, as resources and medical professionals are already overwhelmed.
-Follow government and social distancing guidelines.
-Follow regulations set by Parks Canada.
With those considerations, earlier this week I set off to kayak to an uninhabited little island only a 4km paddle away from my home. It was one of the most beautiful nights as the sky turned the town and mountains in the distance pink, as if for a moment we were seeing the world through rose coloured glasses. I am excited to share the photos from this trip and as many jobs are cancelled or put on hold, I am grateful for those who continue to support my little business during this time.
With that said I am stoked to be doing a takeover of my week in self isolation over so come check out how I’m my own backyard this week! Stay safe!
