You don’t need people in the photo to know there’s a story happening. 👀

I took this photo while photographing an engagement party about a year ago.

No faces. No big moment happening.

But you can still see the celebration in the details, the food prepared for everyone, the little decorations, and all the thought that went into bringing people together.

That’s something I’ve always loved about storytelling photography.

Sometimes the things surrounding a moment tell just as much of the story as the people in it. 🤍

A little behind the scenes of why I started Island Views & Vibes.

It actually started with my love of photographing Vancouver Island. I loved the idea that the landscapes I was capturing could become more than photos sitting in my camera roll, they could become imagery for hotels, Airbnbs, tourism businesses and brands wanting to share a piece of the Island.

Then somewhere along the way, I realized how much I loved photographing the businesses themselves too.

The people.
The process.
The products.
The little details that make each one different.

And that’s really what Island Views & Vibes has grown into, sharing the Island while helping businesses tell their stories.

I share even more of my Vancouver Island adventures and nature videos over on TikTok, while Instagram has become the place where I bring both sides of my photography together.

A little photography backstory 📸

My first photography job was actually at Photos Unlimited, where photographing babies was one of my favourite parts of the job.

Years later, photographing my own children brought that love of photography back but this time, I found myself drawn to the little moments and details that told a bigger story.

These are a few of my favourite photos I’ve taken over the years with more of a storytelling approach capturing the little moments rather than just the perfectly posed photo.

Today, I mostly photograph businesses, but that part of my photography never changed.

The best photos don’t just show you what something looked like. They remind you what it felt like.

A little camera experimenting yesterday!

I recently got a new lens and have been having so much fun playing around with it and seeing what I can capture.

I took these two photos of the moon and now I can’t decide which one I like more. 😂

Which one is your favourite? 1 or 2?

I love being able to just play with my camera and try something new. Sometimes that’s where the most fun happens!

Sometimes editing isn’t about adding more. It’s about taking away.

This is the same photo, just before and after editing.

In the original, there was quite a bit happening around the feathers that pulled my eye away from the details I actually wanted to highlight.

So I cleaned up the distracting elements, adjusted the lighting, and gave the feathers, sweetgrass and dried plants more room to stand on their own.

Nothing about the moment changed. I just changed what your eye notices first.

That’s one of my favourite parts of the editing process, figuring out what needs to stay, what needs to go, and how to make the subject of the photograph feel intentional.

Ever wonder why I named my business Island Views and Vibes? The island views speak for themselves, but I always bring the vibes.

These photos from our backpacking trip to Century Sam a couple of weeks ago are the perfect example.

Fun fact: This was one of the first hikes we did when we moved to Vancouver Island back in 2020. We didn't do any research, showed up midday, and completely ran out of time to make it back to our car.

Six years later, we came prepared. We did our research and made it to the top, carrying 30lbs on our backs for our very first backpacking trip. I was incredibly nervous, but we did it!

If you are planning to hike Century Sam soon, the new trailhead is challenging. I highly recommend bringing hiking poles, wearing proper footwear since the dirt gets very slippery when wet, packing light, and arriving early.

Whether I’m behind the camera for a client session or exploring the peaks, I'm always looking for the best views and the best energy.

A photographer’s question… 📸

These two photos were taken just seconds apart.

We capture working her magic, helping women learn how to manage their money. Most of her days are spent on Zoom or meeting in person, so we wanted to capture that authentic, everyday flow.

Nothing was posed. I simply watched the moment unfold over a cup of coffee.

Photo 1: A closer, intimate look at the work in action.
Photo 2: A wider view showing the whole workspace.

Sometimes a tiny shift in perspective completely changes the feeling of an image.
