“I started carving 25 years ago. My older brother came to my apartment one time. He said to me, ‘Instead of sitting there all the time watching TV, why don’t you come up and watch me carve?’ So I went up with him, and I watched him for about 2 weeks before I started trying it on my own. All I was doing at the start was sanding. After the first couple weeks, he said to me, you ready? And I remember the exact piece he drew out for me to carve: a killer whale with a steelhead tail, one of my worldwide trademarks now."

"That was 25 years ago. And now I’ve been doing this ever since. My brother always iterated to me, simply pick up the knife, and do something. And so that's what I did. I don’t have a Hummer, or a Lamborghini, but I’m content with what I do. If it wasn’t for my brother, I’d be sitting on the streets, begging for change. I still am on the streets, but I’ve been able to make a living off of this. After 25 years, you get to be pretty good at something. Everybody here appreciates my art. Don’t get me wrong, when I first started, I was really frustrated. I didn’t realize how bad I was. Back over here is a carving by my wife, Britney. She’s only been carving two and a half months. I’m very impressed with her, and at the same time, I’m reliving my past with her, at the times when I was frustrated. My brother always told me, ‘Don’t give up! Practice makes perfect.’ And I’m really thankful for his encouragement. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be sitting here in Gastown, making a living doing something I love.” - Darcy

My 2018 summary:
(It's pretty long)
Everyone complains about their rough patch in 2018, how they didn’t achieve certain goals in life or the lists of unfortunate events they been through. Similarly I have the same thoughts too. However, through the series of misfortune in the year, I did find myself thriving in the littles miracles and surprises that were unseen because the mountains of burden we layed upon ourselves. Everything happens for a reason, the good ones are here to bring joy and the bad ones are here to teach us a lesson. I am truly thankful for the ones who came into my life this year and left a remarkable memory. Your appearance made this disappointing year to something more memorable:) Focus on the bright side, beacuse it's more important to improve and strive be better rather than regreting about the past. Goodbye 2018, and let's say hello to 2019:)
