In 2020 the world stopped.
Doors closed. We were all stuck at home, trying to feel connected again.
I joined a little local barter group. I came across a woman who crochets the most beautiful toques. She made three for me and my kids, in exchange for a family photo session. In 2021 restrictions eventually lifted so we can do their photo session
Jackson was 1. He’s 6 now.
I’ve had the honor of documenting every single year in between. And in 2023, Little brother Theo joined, and my heart just grew again. Last Sunday we did their annual family pictures - and I took a portrait of the boys and I just felt so content. 6 years with this family and we met during a pandemic not knowing each other at all , and we met through a barter group on Facebook.

This is what I want every family reading this to know:
It’s never just photos.
It’s trust. It’s history. It’s watching your story unfold, year after year. ❤️

The Inspiration Behind Creating These Mini Sessions
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It starts innocently enough…
“Okay buddy, what do you want to wear for picture day?” Kid chooses a shirt that has been living on the floor since June. You suggest something else. Suddenly you’re negotiating like a hostage negotiator.
Then comes the hair. The hair that looked FINE five minutes ago is now apparently the most important hair in the world.
Then someone spills something.
Someone has to p**p.
Someone is crying.
Someone is refusing to smile because you “made them smile.”
And by the time you finally arrive at school, you’ve spent $87 on an outfit they’ll never wear again, threatened to cancel Christmas, and taken approximately 47 photos…
…. Crossing your fingers that this year you nailed it
Ladies and gentleman I present to you:
As officially listed in the highly classified handbook:
📕 “HOW TO P**S OFF YOUR MOM: A CHILD’S GUIDE TO NEVER JUST SMILING FOR ONE DAMN PICTURE.”
After extensive research, field testing, and witnessing countless mothers slowly lose their will to live, we proudly present: THE TOP 5 BACK TO SCHOOL PICTURE TIPS
#1 — The P**p Face 💩
Squint every eye muscle you own. Pucker your lips like you’ve just smelled something suspicious. Bonus points if you look like you’re actively trying to push a small watermelon out of your body.
#2 — The Limp Noodle 🫠
Photographer: “Stand up straight!”
Child: immediately develops the structural integrity of cooked spaghetti.
Knees bent. Body slouched. Head somewhere in another time zone.
#4 — The “I Literally Cannot Hear You” Pose 🙄
Mom: “Look at the camera.”
Child: stares at the ceiling, wall, shoe, passing squirrel, literally anything but the camera.
Mom: “LOOK HERE.”
Child: looks directly into the camera with the emotional warmth exactly like someone called :
The Tangerine Tyrant — “Big feelings. Bigger ego. Zero cuddles" also known as The The Self-Tanned Snowman — “Orange exterior. Cold dead stare.”
#5 — The Teenager Who Has Been Personally Betrayed 😑
Arms crossed. Jaw clenched. One eyebrow raised.
Expression says, “I cannot believe you have subjected me to this humiliation.”
Meanwhile Mom has spent $74.99 on an outfit specifically for this photograph.
And there you have it.
Five perfectly executed techniques designed to ensure that after 47 photographs, two threats, one bribe, an emotional breakdown, cancelling Christmas …
Mom still has ZERO usable pictures. 😂

THIS is why I’m offering BACK-TO-SCHOOL MINI SESSIONS.
Just a quick, fun session to capture those first-day-of-school personalities — the missing teeth, crooked smiles, dramatic faces, tiny backpacks, big feelings, and all the chaos that makes this season so ridiculously adorable.
It’s expensive. It’s stressful. It’s emotional.It’s exciting. It’s scary.
And somehow, every year, we voluntarily do it all over again. 😂
Because one day you’ll look back and miss the chaos. Probably. Maybe.
Book your back-to-school mini and let’s document the madness before they grow up and start asking for money instead of snacks. 🎒😂
So, fellow parents… can we level with each other for a minute?
Do you ever get your kids’ back-to-school pictures back and think:
“WTF? Who is that?” Because I have.
And after years of photographing children, daycares, Montessori schools, sports teams and other events—including kids as young as two—I started thinking:
I can actually help with this.
My WHY
First, because I’m a photographer and I genuinely LOVE what I do.
I love children. I love celebrating milestones. And I love freezing a little piece of time that otherwise disappears ridiculously fast.
I have families who book their Fall family sessions with me every year and pay a little extra so I can photograph their kids’ annual back-to-school portraits too.
But there’s another reason.
I’m a mom.
I have two kids. All three of us have ADHD, in different ways, and I can tell you right now…
I absolutely do not have my ducks in a row.
They may not even be in the same pond. 😂
My ADHD diagnosis only came two years ago, and one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is that my version of “perfect” isn't necessarily my kids’ version of “perfect.”
I believe in simplifying life wherever we can. I love the Let Them Theory – do yourself a favour and add it to your list of books to read , Mel Robbins is amazing . I actually got LET THEM tattooed on the inside of my arm as a constant reminder. Let them.
There has to be a way to meet our kids halfway.
Happy kids = happier parents.
And sometimes that means changing how we do things.
Picture this…
Its hot, you’ve worked all day. You’ve picked up groceries. Run errands. Somehow remembered approximately 47 things your family needed. You finally get home and your son is standing at the door waiting for you.“I think I want to get my hair cut for picture day.” You stare at him. Because obviously he must mean next year. This is the same child who refused a haircut when school started 6 days ago because he wanted to grow his hair out..Off we go. You get the haircut.Everyone is hangry. Everything is running late tonight.
Your stress level is somewhere between mildly irritated and I am about to move into the woods and live alone.
Congratulations, you survived picture day!!!!
Eventually, you get the pictures back. You open the envelope. You have to look twice.
Why is he wearing a toque?! In this weather – its so bloody hot ? where did he find the toque ? no wait , I have never seen that toque in my life ? WHY DID WE GET THE HAIRCUT?!
BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP
Okay. Deep breath.
You move on to the next picture. (Sigh of relief, very short lived)
“Oh good. Someone told him to take the toque off.”
NO. He took the toque off but didn't brush his hair. The gel he used that morning is really great, unfortunately, every single hair is now standing straight up like it has received a formal invitation to leave his head.
You laugh. Because what else can you do? Count to ten. Breath. Think , Let them.
Maybe retake day will be better…
It isn't.
And now you are the proud owner of a back-to-school portrait that cost you a pretty penny, almost cost you your sanity , PLUS the $40 haircut…
…and somehow the photographer has captured your child's signature P**p Face on the retake.
😂
And then I had an idea.
Last year, while photographing back-to-school pictures, I watched a mom arrive with her child.
I honestly felt for her.
She looked like she was leaving for a week-long expedition.
She was carrying her child (maybe 3 years old) , 2 massive bags and she had her son's picture day outfit in a Ziploc bag. Inside were tissues, wet wipes and a little brush.
She asked the teacher:
“Can you please brush his hair right before his picture?”
She handed the bag to the teacher , and all of a sudden , all HELL broke loose.
She walks to the change room to put his outfit on , trying to console him on her way there, as she thought maybe if she got him dressed it will help the situation. We all know you can't necessarily dress your child in their beautiful picture-day outfit at home. (depending on their age of course)
Because between your front door and school, your child will inevitably find something to spill on it. Once your child puts that outfit on , it activates something that attracts anything that leaves a stain.
The “healthy” zucchini brownies you baked last night , instead of taking your well earned long bubble bath , because you're trying to make better choices for your family. That same brownie that you have sacrificed so much for , has one mission only , find a child with a clean shirt. STAT
The shirt you've had sitting aside for WEEKS. The shirt you planned. Yes that son of a bitch. The same shirt your child is now screaming at as though it has personally offended their entire bloodline.
That shirt is possessed.
You try to stay calm. You take a breath, try to not cry. You have to go to work and walk away from your crying child. You're crying internally. You get in the car and drive to work exhausted, irritated, guilty and feeling like the morning could have gone so differently.
So I thought… what if we just made this easier?
That’s why I created my Back-to-School Mini Sessions.
You come to my home studio in Headingley.
There are 5 days to choose from.
You arrive already dressed and ready. (No outdoor shoes in the studio)
The session takes about 5 minutes. No distractions. No rushing around trying to make everything perfect.
Just your kid, me and a camera.
And if your child wants to bring something that makes the experience more them?
Bring it.
The new light-up shoes. The Spiderman backpack that's approximately twice the size of your child.
Bring a sign if you want.
Let them show me who they are. Because I don't need them to look like every other kid in the school picture. I want their personality.
MOST IMPORTANTLY
Because every child is different, I also send you a quick questionnaire before your session.
You can tell me about any special needs, sensory triggers, things your child dislikes, things that help them feel comfortable, favourite toys, comfort items and their preferred pronouns.
It's just a few questions so I can get to know your child before they walk through my door.Because sometimes the difference between a stressful experience and a great one is simply having someone understand your kid.
And yes…
I will still try to get that beautiful smile.
But if your kid gives me the world's most spectacular side-eye instead?
I'm probably going to photograph that too. 😂
Because that's them.
And one day, you're going to look back at these pictures and wish you could go back to this exact version of your child.
So let's make picture day the easy part.
**You handle school.
I'll handle the pictures.**
