Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland

I’m not a fan of cold, but I am a fan of this. 😍 Winter brings so much beauty and magic; The whole world sparkles and huddles together beneath a white blanket.

It is a bit like a glittery scarf a magician has draped over an illusion, as Jack Frost looks at us with mischief in his eyes and says, “Just you wait! The magic is working…”

And then when Spring returns, he pulls the scarf away with a flourish, revealing the transformation beneath.

Looking at Winter in this playful way helps weather those weary months up here in Canada. And I’m looking forward to finding magic straight through until March.☺️

There's no place like home for the holidays ❄️

If you're not a snow fan, it doesn't mean you have to wait for family photos. Beautiful pictures can be made indoors, too. We don't even need a fancy location, just a warm living room and some loving arms.

There's no denying the comfort and coziness of being at home with the people you love. That ease shows up in your photos, too!

So invite me over sometime! I'd be delighted to show you just how much beautiful life that living room really holds. 😊

Holly the Christmas Elf;

Did you know that I've been taking photos of children with Santa for over 20 years? The elf in this very old photograph is me! And Santa? That's my dad - the original Santa Claus and Altona's mall Santa for many years.

I used to put on the costume and operate the camera at the Santa booth in the Altona mall, every single year. I think I was only 9 the first time I said, "Look at the camera and say Christmas Trees!"

Photographing children with Santa at the Holiday Market this Saturday feels like a full circle moment, and it makes me so excited and emotional. Life is a funny thing. I can't wait to make Christmas magic for the children in this community!

I'll post some more childhood photos of myself with Santa in my stories, so if you're curious about how awkward I looked as a kid, that's where you'll find your answer. 😂

(And don't worry - the photos of your children with Santa will be a bit more... modern?) 😉

If you really hold me tight, all the way home I'll be warm. 💛

This family messaged me on the first snowfall of the year, in the off-chance I could come right away and capture the beauty of the coming season.

And my reply was a great big giant yes! Who could resist the magic of this love?

The Discovery 🎅

The holidays bring out a very creative (silly) side in me, and I was raised in a house full of Norman Rockwell. Over the years I've tried my take on many of his beautiful illustrations, and this is definitely one of my favourites.

If you haven't heard yet, Santa and I will be putting together a cozy cottage at the Holiday Market! Check out my previous post for more details, and be sure to drop in for an audience with the legend himself!

Psst - adults are welcome too! Santa doesn't discriminate between your child and your inner-child! 😉

Spooky season 👻

Grateful for clients who trust me enough to let me take complete creative control of their sessions. I love the playfulness and spookiness of this series, and I'm so lucky to have such loyal and trusting people in my life!

(I've been photographing this mother-daughter duo for over 10 years!)

Making magic is what I do best, and the beautiful folks who honour me with their stories know it, too. 🌜

I see your true colours;

Did you know that Autumn is the only time the trees show us who they really are?

The leaves emerge in the Spring sunshine, bursting from branches, protected by a mask of chlorophyll that gives them their green hue. It is as though they have arrived at a party in costume, unsure of how they will be received, finding security in their facade until they have a better understanding of the crowd and their place in it.

As the summer wears on, the sun demands attention for long days and late evenings and so the leaves grip tightly to their masks. Their disguise helps them put to better use the gifts sent by their sun partner. It helps them work.

They do not judge themselves for requiring the mask. It serves an important purpose. It is the best the leaves can do.

In Autumn, as the days grow shorter and the leaves have taken all they needed, they shed their green masks, revealing the colours they had inside all along.

They are not adding to themselves to appear that way, they are not becoming more beautiful by being productive; Not by taking and hoarding and longing.

Their beauty is revealed through the process of release. They stop producing new chlorophyll and eventually destroy any that remains, and they completely let go. They exhale. They slow down.

They rest.

Their deepest, most honest selves are revealed in this rest, and they are fearless in this vulnerability because they know it is beautiful. The yellows and oranges sing, Look! Look what rest can do!

They know that slowing down and releasing are required for the cycle to continue. They know they won't be ready to burst forth when Spring returns if they resist this crucial pause.

Rest and release might help us celebrate our true colours, too.

It cannot always be Spring.
But Spring will come again.
And our beautiful rest might assure our readiness for when it does.

I am so moved by the affection felt between humans and dogs. I am so inspired by the love that these four-legged friends offer; It is hard to find love so purely unconditional among humans, though it does exist.

It is so forgiving and unwavering. It is a love that can survive for years in a dog's heart, long after they have lost their master. It doesn't soon depart from their human's heart, either. It is transformative.

I am lucky to witness human connection in so many different forms. I feel like a historian or a scientist, vigilantly documenting and cataloguing each one, hungrily seeking out new examples; New ways that humans are loving each other, loving creatures, loving the earth, loving their beautiful lives.

So this is just a friendly reminder that all of your family members are welcome at your sessions.

Even (especially) the furry ones.

In the middle of the magic;

My clients know that I'm a bit silly during sessions. As I shout directions from afar, passersby will see me climbing trees, lying on my belly in the dirt, squatting like a frog, or hiding in a bush, shooting through the red autumn leaves.

I love using the layers that surround my subjects. I like to imagine that the space behind them is a soft cushion, the space in front of them is a cozy blanket, and they are nestled in the middle together, safe and sound.

Perhaps I am a bit silly to believe the world around us is put there just to envelop us in beauty and wonder. But when I slow down, look around, and rest in that place of mindfulness, I just can't imagine it any other way.
