Say hello to STEVE….

STEVE is a rare, aurora-like atmospheric glow that appears as a narrow purple or mauve ribbon stretching east–west across the sky.

STEVE stands for:

Strong
Thermal
Emission
Velocity
Enhancement

Unlike an ordinary aurora—which is primarily produced by energetic particles raining into the atmosphere—STEVE is associated with an extremely hot, fast-moving stream of charged gas in the upper atmosphere, usually south of the main auroral oval.

It was a bit of a hike out to this small world, but I had a few coyotes for company. Sitting alone on a gently sloping hilltop under a blanket of starlight, holding its memories and awaiting collapse.

The last few auroras have been cloudy for me.

But…I did manage to get out under the stars a few nights ago. Despite the -31C temperature it was still a great night. The only downside was the light, thin clouds that rolled in.

This lonely farmstead was shot with a modified Nikon Z6ii, 20mm and I used a clip-in Ha Filter.

Do the clouds add to the photo? Or do they mess it up? What do you think?
