Janis Lempera photo I'm a photographer, writer and mom of 3. I love a great story, especially ones with pictures in them

I'm a documentary and lifestyle family and portrait photographer based in mid-town Toronto and Jackson's Point, ON.

On my way to a one-year-old session with this sweet boy and his family. I’m sure he hasn’t changed at all. 😉

If we've spoken in person in the past 18 months, you've no doubt heard me go on about a) my pottery classes b) my incredible teacher Natalie Waddell. Beyond just being the most specific and direct instructor, she's basically my therapist and honoured to call her my friend. I was honoured when she asked me to take some photos of her this spring. If her face looks familiar it's because you may recognize her from the best reality show of all time THE GREAT CANADIAN POTTERY THROW DOWN on CBC. Sadly - the show was not picked up for a 2nd season. If you're also upset about this news (I mean who wouldn't be!) - here's link to the petition to save the show.
.. And if you book me for a session this summer - I may bring you a mug. They are starting to pile up!

When I joined this adorable family for a morning at the I didn’t appreciate it may be my very last visit. The staff was so kind and didn’t even ask for a permit. I was excited to offer this session idea to other fun families. The Science Centre holds a special place in my heart as a kid and parent. My fingers are crossed that this decision will be reversed - so we can head back and make some more memories soon.

When I first opened my photo business, I was blissfully unaware of the amount of non-photography work involved in running said business. One of those jobs is keeping up on social. Lately, I've gotten so bad at it that a client actually asked me if I was still working. So, to answer - YES! I’m still working (and busy thanks to your referrals!). YES! I’d love to work with you. And YES! I will try to get better about posting. As a first step - here’s a favourite image from this fall that reminds me WHY I started my photography business in the first place. Capturing Messy. Beautiful. Joy.

As an advocate for 40-not-50, Sherry Wilcox is making real change happen for women in Ontario. Her work to access mammograms a decade earlier, may go on to save our lives, or the lives of our loved ones and our neighbours. Sherry’s story is featured in Chatelaine this month, and I’m beyond touched she submitted my photo of her family to be published with the article. I post led the link in my bio - take a few minutes, read, share and thank Sherry and the other advocates who are fighting for this important change in our health care system. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, honour to play a small part in sharing your story.

These portraits took 20 minutes steps from his front door on a grey day in February.

Refreshing your headshot can be quick, simple, painless and I dare to suggest…fun!

If your current headshot is more than 10 years old and/or cut out from a wedding group shot, send me a message and let’s make a plan.

A funny story about this portrait.

My good friend and client Cleo Haber needed pictures for her new website and launch of her psychotherapy practice Northstar Therapy - https://www.northstartherapy.ca/.

We spent the session covering all the usual shots: Cleo in front of her enviably curated bookcase, Cleo smiling with a mug of tea, Cleo “consulting” with a client on zoom. Right at the end of the session - I looked over at the giant plants she manages to keep alive in her condo and said, “can you stand in the middle of your jungle? It may look weird. I may be amazing. We’re shooting digital, so why not?”

Guess which photo she picked for the front page of her website?

Anyway, Happy Friday! Step out of your comfort zone, do something weird this weekend - it may turn out amazing. Thank you for listening to my TedTalk.
