Meet Jen Bonner, executive director of the Hub in Hamilton, Ontario, a community organization that aims to connect the most vulnerable individuals to the essential services they need. The Hub also serves as an invaluable refuge for those living on the streets, providing access to medical care, nourishment, clothing, and harm-reduction supplies.

To say that Jen and her team go above and beyond in assisting their clients would be a significant understatement. Jen has tremendous insight into the community she serves and recognizes that such a diverse population with distinct needs requires a client-centred, inclusive, and empathetic approach. Jen and her team are also well-acquainted with assisting those who have been or are currently incarcerated.

In this clip from our upcoming documentary, watch Jen articulate not only the impact that being incarcerated in a provincial detention centre has on individuals with substance use disorders, but also the particular challenges that imprisonment imposes on their loved ones.

Sat down for an informative discussion with Hamilton criminal defence lawyer Jaime Stephenson. Jaime’s spirited, empathetic, and rigorous approach to lawyering resonates with her diverse clientele, ranging from the more fortunate to the most vulnerable in the community. Jaime shared important insights into the conditions and procedures of Ontario’s jails, which she has gained not only through her clients’ experiences but also by regularly attending these institutions over the years.

Through her steadfast representation, Jaime continues to fight for her clients’ Charter rights to fair and dignified treatment at every stage.

In the last few months, we sat down to speak with Kevin Egan, a lawyer at McKenzie Lake in London, Ontario. For over 15 years, Kevin has been tenaciously advocating for prisoner rights, and to this end, has represented countless clients in their fight for justice against Ontario’s detention centres and their ongoing maltreatment of inmates.

Most recently, in April 2023, Kevin tentatively settled a $33-million dollar class-action lawsuit against the province of Ontario relating to the appalling conditions and systemic mistreatment at London’s Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (often referred to as “The Devil’s Playground”). Kevin hopes the settlement will bring some measure of closure and assistance to those who have been left to suffer due to their experiences at this institution.

Kevin has long advocated that Ontario must immediately take the necessary steps to ensure that each inmate is treated like any other human being, all equally deserving of dignity, respect, safety, and security, and thus uphold our Charter-enshrined values.

Roxanne Gillis, a graduate student of gender and Indigenous studies at York University, sat down with us to discuss a variety of pressing social issues, viz. the violent policing of Indigeneity, the inherent failures of our social systems, the complexity of intergenerational trauma as well as addiction, and the path toward meaningful healing.

A vocal and passionate advocate for Indigenous women’s rights, Roxanne shared piercing insights informed not only by her in-depth knowledge, but also her lived experiences.

On December 1st, 2018, Angela Case received shattering news that no mother should ever have to bear – her son, Jordan Case, only 22 years of age, had died while in custody at the Niagara Detention Centre.

In segregation for 23 hours a day with a cellmate who should not have been housed with him, but for pervasive overcrowding, Jordan was deemed by the Coroner to have overdosed.

Nearly five years later, however, Angela is still searching – and fighting – for answers to questions that continue to cloud her and her family’s mind.

She graciously sat down with us to share her story, fiercely hoping that justice in the form of answers, as well as change, will one day come.

Christopher Ray experienced some difficult years when his addiction spiralled out of control and spilled into the criminal justice system, ultimately resulting in his incarceration at various institutions throughout Ontario beginning in 2012.

Endearing, perceptive, and full of humorous spirit, Christopher sat down with us to discuss his time behind bars, sharing his searing insights into the brutal system he had to navigate.

On June 29th, 2017, Amy McKechnie unexpectedly lost her brother when he overdosed while on remand (and therefore still legally innocent) at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre. She was not even notified by the jail of his passing, and only found out through her brother's acquaintance.

Five years later, Amy is still fighting in search of answers as to the circumstances of her brother's death.

Amy was kind enough to sit down with us and candidly discuss her painful experiences, the need for accountability, as well as the systemic changes required in order to prevent other families from losing their loved ones.
