Disappointed in the Treatment at Casey Lake Collection Center
⭐☆☆☆☆
I don’t usually write reviews like this, but after what happened today, I feel it’s important to share.
I went to the Casey Lake Collection Center in Adairsville with a trailer loaded with some bed frames, a couple of mattresses, and some scrap metal. My neighbor — a kind Black gentleman — offered to help and drove his truck to assist me. When we arrived, an elderly white employee approached us. He wouldn’t make eye contact, didn’t ask any questions, and immediately said, “Nope, you can’t dump that here,” before walking away.
He claimed they only accepted a minimum of two mattresses, and everything else had to go — but instead of explaining politely or helping us figure out next steps, he dismissed us and refused to communicate any further. It was as if he had made up his mind about us the moment we arrived.
Now, I want to be clear: I don’t like to throw around the word “racist.” I believe it’s an overused term that’s often used as a way to shut people down without real conversation. But in this situation, watching how my neighbor — a Black man — was treated by this older white gentleman, I couldn’t help but feel there was a layer of disrespect that went beyond just bad customer service. It didn’t sit right with me, and it still doesn’t.
We drove to the Cartersville collection center and had no problems at all. We were greeted with kindness and respect, the way any community member should be.
This was my first real negative experience in Adairsville — and it was a painful one. I love this town, and I want to believe it stands for better than what we experienced. But moments like this are a reminder that we still have work to do, even in small towns.
I truly hope this behavior doesn’t reflect the values of the entire community — because Adairsville deserves better.
