Camera number 0290547.
The first serially produced ALPA 12 Model ever delivered to the world.
The camera before it — number 0290546 — was never meant to leave. It carries the birthdate of Thomas Weber, the man who created the ALPA 12. His camera. His number. The origin.
0290547 was the first to go.
In 1998, it was handed to Raymond Depardon. The French Magnum photographer carried it across continents, through the wandering landscapes that became his series ERRANCE.
Now, nearly three decades later, this historic ALPA 12 WA has returned to ALPA to be carefully serviced, cleaned, repaired, and prepared for continued use, including the possibility of working with a modern digital back.
This film documents the full camera service in the tradition of a slow restoration video: a careful observation of precision, mechanics, patina, and continuity.
This restoration does not intend to erase time.
Every mark, every scratch, every trace of use has been preserved. They are part of the camera’s memory and part of the photographic life it has witnessed.
The result is an observation of care and continuity: a medium format camera returning to use, almost thirty years after it was first delivered.
Published on May 29 in memory of Thomas Weber, developer of the ALPA 12, and in recognition of the friendship and history connecting Thomas Weber, Raymond Depardon, and ALPA.
Some cameras carry famous names. Others carry private stories. In service, both deserve the same care.
