Last week, I spent a few days in Val di Sole 🇮🇹 with Luca. We were invited to test the loops created by Val di Sole Bikeland and labeled as 'alpine gravel'.
❓What is alpine gravel❓
In their own words: "It’s far more technically challenging and exciting than many of the trails you’re used to."
❓How is it❓
Just as it says on the label. We grinded up steep, steep stuff and rode down bone rattling trails. We hiked a bit, but way less than I expected. As a reward, we enjoyed many champagne gravel moments. All of this with the breathtaking Val di Sole region in the backdrop. And powered by apfelstrudel.
❓Is it good❓
If you are fit, have decent technical skills and embrace the concept of underbiking, you'll love it. We did - most of the time.
❓Is it a thing❓
The idea of riding a gravel bike on challenging terrain in stunning mountain landscapes has legs. Or rather, wheels. It's very much what we do at home, after all.
Val di Sole has its own way, and more importantly there is a long term vision. We gave some feedback and I trust the riding experience will be refined as the project develops.
Anyway, kudos to Val di Sole for trying new things and pushing the boundaries. And thanks Vitesse Europe, Val di Sole Bike Land, Monroc Hotel and Giacomo Podetti for having us. We had a blast!
I will share more soon on cycliste.ch and Switchback. In the meantime, here are some images I shot on the trails.
