Village houses in the alps of Switzerland are usually decorated with flower boxes like the one you see here.

"Window boxes have a history traced back to ancient Rome and were typically used by the lower classes that didn’t have the land for a traditional garden. They were used to grow food for the family, herbs for medicinal purposes or flowers used in religious ceremonies. As time went on, the boxes became popular in other countries and were used more as a decorative element to adorn homes"

Interesting fact about Wengen, Switzerland

From August 1944 to the end of World War II, Wengen served as a sort of open-air internment camp for allied prisoners, mostly US bomber crews. Since the only practical way in or out of Wengen was via the cog railway, it was difficult for internees to escape - wikipedia

My friend Nitin Gupta (an Assistant Professor in Indian Institue Of Technology, Kanpur) has been selected to be one of the finalists for Nature India photo contest.

What I like about this pic is that the mosquito was actively sucking blood out of him while he managed to pick up a DSLR and got the right focus and sharpness in this picture. Commendable!

In Nitin's words
"Female mosquitoes bite us because they need blood to nourish their eggs. The bite itself is not harmful: the tiny belly of a mosquito, seen in the photograph, can take no more than a few microliters of blood at a time, while the human body produces 10 times more every minute. What makes the bite dangerous occasionally is what the mosquito leaves behind, which could be a deadly parasite.
The photograph shows a female Culex mosquito gorging on my left hand, which I captured using a camera held in the right hand."

So next time a mosquito bites you, instead of slapping it, you know what to do ;)

Muiden Castle (Dutch: Muiderslot) is a castle in the Netherlands, located some 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, in Muiden. You can bike from Amsterdam to visit this castle, like I did :) You have to bike on few bridges and if lucky, you will be able to see some sheep grazing on the way. Amsterdam is super bike friendly with dedicated bike paths everywhere, even on bridges.
