The three that made me fall in love with Scotland. 🐄🐄🐄

I’d never seen Highland cattle before this trip until I turned a corner on Iona and found these three young coos (scroll for more), lying in a pasture, completely unbothered. They are super cute due to their woolly coats and docile nature. They are native to Scotland and are the come in 6 registered colors (check comments for more).

When I think of this Scotland trip, this is one of the first images that comes to mind. Ask my mom, this is the one she loves the most.

Sheep in Scotland: curious, friendly, and apparently fans of fence-nibbling. 🐑🌿

They outnumber people here, and with zero fear of tourists. This little one caught my eye during our walking tour on the Isle of Iona. They decided the fence looked like a snack.

Just a simple, grounded moment in the middle of a grand landscape.

Every time we spotted them, the excitement in the air was palpable. 🐑✨

Sheep outnumber people in Scotland, but during lambing season, it’s absolute chaos. This was our first encounter but I swear every single time we saw lambs—and it happened a LOT—our whole group acted like we’d never seen one before. That kind of joy is contagious.

This was taken during a stop on the way to Jarlshof, an archaeological site with over 5,000 years of history... but let’s be honest, the lambs stole the show.

During this journey, I realized that the most profound travel moments aren’t always the grand landmarks—they’re these unexpected, quiet pauses that steal your heart.

The Isle of Iona has been car-free since 1978. That’s why scenes like this—a bike resting against a shed—feel so quintessentially Iona. Quiet. Timeless. Meditative.

I have a soft spot for these “one item” compositions. They’re small moments that reveal the character of a place.

There is a specific magic in watching the islands recede into the distance. 🌅

Leaving Lerwick at sunset was another highlight of this trip. The moon was up. The ship was glowing. And for a moment, everything felt perfect.

With cruises, you often spend the day exploring on land and sail at night. But there’s magic in that departure—standing on deck, watching the colors shift, feeling the salt air, and seeing the islands shrink behind you.

My favorite time to leave port is always sunset—the hustle of the crew, the rising moon, and the sky catching fire. This was the view leaving Lerwick with ; that rare feeling of being exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Some views you can only capture from a boat. 🌉

This is the Queensferry Crossing with the Forth Road Bridge behind it—two generations of Scottish engineering in a single frame. I took this from the top deck of our cruise ship as we sailed underneath.

The Queensferry Crossing opened in 2017 with the tallest bridge towers in the UK. It’s also the longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge in the world. The Forth Road Bridge dates to 1964, while the Forth Bridge (check the comments for more) opened in 1890. Together, they tell a story of innovation spanning three centuries.

My eye kept returning to this solitary splash of color by the bay. 💦🖍️

A red shed, a lighthouse, and views that don’t quit.

Amidst the dramatic cliffs and ancient pastures of Orkney, sometimes a red shed is all you need. Captured during a quiet moment of our journey—proving that the best compositions often find you while you’re waiting for your tea.

The Brough of Birsay Lighthouse in the distance is unmanned and solar-powered since 2002. It keeps watch so we don’t have to.

Low tide reveals what the sea hides. 🐚

I love looking in unconventional directions—like down. On a nearby beach from where I found the “Little Flower in the Rocks,” I spent time looking down—at the textures, colors, and patterns the ocean leaves behind. During low tide on Iona, the beach reveals textures and details you’d never notice otherwise.

Through my travels, I have realized the most interesting stories are often right under you. That every travel photo is not only about the horizon. Sometimes the story is at your feet. 👣

The tiniest moments are often the biggest discoveries. I love looking for the little things when I travel. 🌼

While the group wondered ahead, I was staring at my feet. A small yellow flower growing in ancient rock crevices—some of the oldest stone in the world — Lewisian gneiss is over 2000 million years old. 😯

Life persists. Beauty hides. You just have to look down sometimes.

What most see as forgotten, I see as character. 🚣

This weathered rowboat was sitting right next to the Tobermory Anchor—easy to overlook, but impossible for me to ignore. Sitting in Tobermory Marina, this boat has clearly seen better days—but that’s exactly what caught my eye. The peeling paint, the weathered wood, the history we’ll never fully know.
