The Birsig River around the 1860s – almost unimaginable today.

Where the Birsig parking lot is located today, parallel to the Steinenvorstadt district, the Birsig River once flowed openly through the city of Basel. In the background, the neo-Gothic St. Elizabeth's Church, built between 1857 and 1864, already rises.

The very low water level is striking in the picture. This was not unusual for the Birsig: for most of the year, it carried very little water. However, during heavy rain or snowmelt, the unassuming stream could quickly transform into a dangerous raging torrent. For centuries, floods from the Birsig repeatedly caused flooding and damage in Basel. Even today, a flood memorial plaque on Basel's town hall commemorates the devastating floods of 1529 and 1530.

The open Birsig shaped the cityscape for centuries. Unfortunately, it also served as a sewer. Household waste, sewage, and industrial wastewater flowed directly into the water, leading to significant hygiene problems, especially during the summer months. It wasn't until the late 19th century that the comprehensive correction and covering of the river began.

Today, the Birsig flows invisibly beneath streets and buildings in this section – but old photographs like this one still show a Basel characterized by its open waterway.
