This weekend I had the pleasure of taking part in Supercondominio8 — The Common Good, the annual gathering of European independent art spaces, held this year between Dogliani and Bene Vagienna.
I presented Sonnenstube, the independent space and collective in Lugano that I have been part of since 2017, trying to think through what happens when an art space becomes a community — and, perhaps more importantly, what it actually takes to keep a community alive over time.
I spoke about friendship, care, conflict, invisible labour, provincial contexts, precarity, and the many small gestures that make a collective possible but rarely make it into an institutional report.
It was a real pleasure to share these questions with so many people working from different independent spaces across Europe, and to spend two days exchanging practices, experiences, doubts and stories.
A huge thank you to Matteo Mottin for inviting Sonnenstube, especially, for the incredible work behind the organisation of these two days — creating the conditions for all these different people, spaces and practices to meet.
