Happy New Year to all! 🥳 🔭

Sharing a few of my square-format deep space images that I took from our garden in 2025. Hope you appreciate them!

I’ll try to be more regular in 2026… 😬

Which one is your favourite ?

The iconic Horsehead and Flame Nebulae 🐴 🔥

Took this image in our garden last week over two nights, about 8 hours of 3 min exposures.

The brightest star Alnitak is a little blown out, but it’s such a hard star to tame during image processing!

Yes, I still take bird images ! 🦉

Indeed it’s obvious that I’ve been focusing more on astrophotography as of late, but bird photography will always remain a passion!

I’m not an owl expert, but I think this a barn owl. Please let me know in the comments if you think otherwise. 👇🏻

Barn owls are not scarce in Switzerland but I rarely have seen them in our area. The past 2 weeks, while outside at night doing some deep space photography, I’ve heard some bird calls that I didn’t recognize (not typical barn owl screeching either). It turns out that we’ve got a pair of them roosting in a large larch tree in our garden. Maybe they’re using the tree for a hunting perch. I don’t think that they are nesting there since the forest is not too far and provides much better cover (could be wrong but I can’t spot a nest area in the tree). Last night, with an almost 90% moon rising, one could observe them flying around the dimly-lit landscape as silhouettes against the night sky. They’re so silent!! 🤫 🦉

Autofocus doesn’t work in these conditions, so I estimated the distance by pre-focusing manually, using high speed flash to illuminate to about 20 meters. Of course I had to get lucky, hoping one would pass close to me. Of the 2-3 decent images I think this one is the best of the lot.

CYGNUS WALL 🦢 🌌

A fragment of the well-known North America nebula, otherwise formally known as NGC 7000.

I was going to take a mosaic of the entire nebula, but given the short nights this season I decided to just shoot this structure with more time-on-target. Perhaps in the future I’ll build on the image.

Swipe to see a starless version as well as a single five minute unprocessed sub, directly out of the camera.

Rosette Nebula taken from my backyard in Switzerland on March 7, 2024. First clear night in months it seems.

First light with Askar FRA400 and ASI 533MC. Only used a UV/IR cut filter here as a kind of baseline image (Bortle 4-5 ish).

About 4 hours of integration including dark frames. Pretty happy with this first effort with a dedicated astro cam. 👍🏻

I’m excited to announce my upcoming exhibition – my first - focusing on the themes of Nature & Space.

I’m even more ecstatic to announce that I will be organizing this small show with my extremely talented daughter Lyanna who will be showing a splendid selection of her original paintings – including some large-format works.
