The Rhine should be allowed to be a river again.

Story for together with writer published 5. December 2024

In the last 26 kilometers before Lake Constance, flood protection along the Rhine should be improved. Switzerland’s longest river could thus be given more space again after more than 130 years. How much space, however, remains a matter of debate.

1. The future: Like here at Landquart, the river should have more space over long stretches.

2. Control center of the drinking water pumping station in Au.

3. Flood protection is no justification for compromising on ecology, says aquatic biologist Lukas Indermaur.

4. The Rhine at the Oberriet border crossing.

5. „The canalization saved the valley“: Christa Köppel represents the interests of the public water suppliers.

6. Canalized: This is what the Rhine looks like today in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley.

Javakheti, Georgia, July 2024

At nearly 2,000 meters above sea level, this high plateau feels endless. The landscape is barren and largely treeless. Mountains formed by volcanic activity surround the region, creating a unique sense of isolation. Living here is tough. Economic difficulties, a harsh climate, and isolation have caused many residents to leave. A lot of houses look abandoned. Yet, the people you meet here offer boundless warmth and hospitality.

Girevi, Georgia, July 2024

As Georgia approaches its crucial election on October 26, 2024, I‘m looking back on my images I took last summer. This photograph was captured in the last valley along the border to Russia.

The society in Georgia is divided: Many seek closer ties with the West, aspiring to join the EU and NATO, while the ruling Georgian Dream party, led by a billionaire, advocates for a Russian-influenced path, implementing „agent laws“ and suppressing the media, NGOs, and the LGBTQ+ community. Once again, the future of this hospitable nation is uncertain.

1. The concrete ceiling of the gallery stands out from the trench. A new solution will be needed here for the road going underneath. When chunks of rock as big as small houses thunder down, stability can hardly be guaranteed. This is due to the melting of glaciers and the thawing of permafrost, which releases a lot of easily mobilizable material. These processes are intensified by heavy rainfall. „All factors that are directly related to climate change,“ says Nils Hählen, head of the natural hazards department in the canton of Bern.

2. The forest road near Flesch was taken away by the increasing riverbed of the Aare. The rubble from the Spreitlouwigraben comes down here. In some places the riverbed is now 15 metres higher than it was a few years ago. This means that the river has to find a new path almost every year and constantly changes the landscape, which results in uncertainty about the future of the residential buildings located near the river bank.

1. Mountain guide Alex Schläppi and his colleague place the observation hut at the Spreitlouwigraben in Guttannen, Switzerland. Everything has to be ready before the mudslide season starts in midsummer. From here, they can observe the landscape movement, store necessary materials, and sleep in the hut if needed.

2. Spreitlouwigraben seen from above. Mudslides regularly carve huge trenches into the landscape here. Initially, the mudslides were a concern for the road’s gallery roofing and the international gas pipeline running under the trench. Now, the mudslides are getting closer to residential buildings in the valley. In early 2024, a couple who had lived there for decades had to leave their home.

3. Teacher Urs Zuberbühler bought a self-sufficient living egg, the Ecocapsule, for almost 100,000 Swiss francs and set it up in the village center as a mini-hotel. „The egg symbolizes an alternative, uses only renewable energy, and is highly political,“ says Zuberbühler. „It’s quirky, futuristic, and stands as a counterpoint in the center of the village.“

Few places in Switzerland feel the impact of the climate crisis more than Guttannen in the Bernese Alps. This small village is increasingly threatened by mudslides, floods, and thawing permafrost. I first visited Guttannen in May 2023 to see how the villagers manage these natural hazards. In May 2024, I returned with journalist , spending several days immersed in the community. Now, our story is published in and I’m excited to share it with you!
